Irish Air Corps / The Irish Air Corps and the Emergency 1939-45
« on: January 01, 2009, 09:44:33 pm »
Came across this interesting web page about the IAC and the Emergency:

http://www.csn.ul.ie/~dan/war/aercrpst.htm

Has anyone else got any interesting stories about this time? I remember reading somewhere (unfortunately cant remember the source) about the night when the Air Corps were scrambled to intercept unknown aircraft in the Dublin sky (thought to be German) possibly after the Short Strand bombings had taken place.  They had been picked up by search lights and if I can recall correctly, warning AA shots were let off.  Of course the IAC were dispersed around the country at that time.

Irish Air Corps / What should the Major Air Corps Roles Be?
« on: August 01, 2007, 09:52:18 pm »
In light of recent comments on other threads I would be interested in hearing all your views on what you think should be the major roles of the Air Corps.  I get the sense that some of you feel we shouldn't have the Air Corps and perhaps leave it to the RAF,USAF or even the French to look after us. If that's the case should we shuck it all in?  Or should we take our sovernity seriously and have a minimum Air Corps/Air Force?

Irish Air Corps / Sorry for the politics lads but......

After such a great Airshow in Salthill did you guys hear what the new Labour Mayor of Galway had to say?  She was not very happy with all the war machines in the City over the weekend or the participation by the RAF and that next year he would attempt to stop the City Council from funding the event!! Nothing of course about the 100,000 souls that came to Salthill and spent their hard earned money in the local economy.
I recommend the we all write to the Mayor individually and give it who began!!

Irish Air Corps / Shannon Exercises
« on: June 28, 2004, 12:16:05 am »
Now that major security exercises around Shannonside have been stood down could I state that the Pilatius 9M cut a dash in the area and even the Americans were most impressed!!
Can I also give great praise to the great work members of the Irish Defence Forces generally. A very professional piece of work indeed.

Irish Air Corps / MATS
« on: June 25, 2004, 09:47:40 pm »
Observing events in Shannon has made me wonder whether the Air Corps MATS aircraft should be named Air Corps One, Air Corps Two and Air Corps Three? After all they have flown the flag to countries that otherwise would never hear of our services.  Any ideas guys?

Irish Air Corps / Air Marshals
« on: January 14, 2004, 10:50:24 pm »
As it now seems likely that Aer Lingus will be required to have armed Air Marshalls on some of its transatlantic flights from Ireland who in your view show undertake this role? The Gardai? The Military Police? or the Ranger Wing?  My own preference is for the Ranger Wing but do you all think?

Some of you may feel that all SAR services should be provided by our colleagues in heli sqns while others may feel it should be left to outside agencies  such as the Coastguard.  Personally I fall into the middle. We should specialise in troop carrying and assault helicopters and leave SAR to the Coastguard but be available when top up is needed in national emerencies etc.
