Aviation News / Ex Irish Spitfire 159 returns to Europe
« on: November 07, 2010, 09:26:36 pm »
According to the latest edition of Aeroplane Spitfire Tr9 MJ772 which was on display at the Experimental Aircraft Association at Oshkosh is returning to Germany to a new owner. When at the Champlin Museum as N8R in Arizona, Doug Champlin covered over the rear cockpit. The new owner intends to change it back to the two seater configuration. It was delivered to the Air Corps in 1951 as 159 and its final flight there was in Jan 1960.
Hopefully it will return to Baldonnel some time when restoration is completed.

Scale Aircraft Modelling / Understanding Air Corps markings
« on: October 13, 2010, 10:45:35 pm »
For the modeller, one of the problems was to recreate the Celtic Boss correctly. During the Emergency the boss was applied in many different ways on as many different aircraft. In effect this means that each aircraft ( as distinct from type) had marking applied in such a way as to make them a subject of individual research. A nightmare!
The problem did not usually raise its head when new types were delivered from the factories but only after a period in service.
I just came across two slides I had taken in Baldonnel in the 1980's. Alouette 212 had just returned to Baldonnel after overhaul by a contractor. Have a look at the Boss.

Irish Aviation History / DH Vampire Reunion
« on: March 25, 2010, 09:08:05 pm »
A reunion of all personnel who were involved in the operation and maintenance of the DH Vampire T55 in Air Corps service between 1956 and 1976 will take place on June 3 2010 at Casement Aerodrome. The programme will include a history of the aircraft in service with the Air Corps and a static display of Vampire paraphernalia and photographs
It is hoped that a serviceable Vampire with the Museum Vampire191 will be on display subject to weather and operational constraints.
The reunion is being organised with the kind permission of the GOC Air Corps and with the generous support of City Jet. If you have flown and worked on the Vampire and would like to receive an invitation to attend the reunion contact Louise Mc Enerney by e mail at   vampirereunion@gmail.com or by phone at 01 8700111.

Aviation Waffle / Cutbacks hit hard
« on: March 14, 2010, 12:00:00 pm »
A good friend of mine put this up on another forum I made a few changes;
                   ---------------------------------------------------------------
"Jack a new retiree greeter at one of the DIY/Flatpack stores, he just could not seem to be able to get to work on time. Every day he was 5, 10 or 15 minutes late
He was a good worker, really tidy , clean shaven sharp minded and really a credit to the company which was underlining their "Older Person Friendly" policy.

One day the boss called him in to the office for a talk, Jack I have to tell you I like your work ethic, you do a great job but your timekeeping is becoming a problem.

"yes I know that boss I am working on it"

Thats good Jack I know that you are a team player. It's odd though you continually coming in late. I know that you were in the Air Corps, what did your Flight Sergeant say when you were continually late arriving.

He would say "Good moring  Brig. Gen would you like your coffee now sir"
                    ------------------------------------------------------------
With thanks to Peter A

Air Corps News / Comdt. Paddy O' Shea DSM, RIP
« on: December 04, 2009, 01:34:09 pm »
Just saw in the papers the notice of the passing of Comdt Paddy O' Shea after a long ilness. Paddy was awarded the DSM on two occasions while serving with the Air Corps. The first occasion on 13 May 1977 with Sgt. R Murray and Armn.D Byrne at the cliff face, Powerscourt Co Wicklow and later on 1 August 1977 with Sgt. Willie Byrne and Owen Sherry during a night rescue at Muckish Mountain Co Donegal.
There was always a welcome from Paddy at Baldonnel. RIP

Irish Air Corps / Alouette202 in new home
« on: August 23, 2009, 09:56:25 pm »
The former Air Corps Alouette III 202 is now happily "tucked in" beside Wessex XR517 at the Ulster Aviation Society Museum at the former WWII RAF airfield at Long Kesh (and one time known as the Maze). Visited there on Saturday for their open day and a very impressive colection of aircraft and artifacts is to be seen. The collection is housed in one of the last two remaining hangars. Well worth a visit.
