Irish Air Corps / NS air
« on: October 02, 2006, 11:07:09 am »
OK, rumour has it that the tender for sale of the 4 Dauphins has had them withdrawn at a price of €600,000.
Now the really sad bit of this is that that may be a realistic asking price for these aircrafts. Yup, 4 choppers and a s***load of spares for the price of a 4 bedroomed semi-' in the capital.
These machines are only about half way thru ' their expected life, but are in need of a rebuild.

I think it's time to let the NS have them, 2 are suitable for shipboard ops', as soon as that CRT junk is ripped out of them, while the other 2 may be adopted for the same job, [I cannot get a definitive answer on this] but even if they are not, they are available for training, inshore work, whatever [subject to the same rebuild, of course].
Selling them at the rumoured price would clearly be not value for money, where as useing them to reintroduce the concept of shipboard air ops' might make a bit of sense.
And, before anyone says anything I do realise that 'sense' is an alien concept to our present and preceeding governments, but you never know......

Many of you have, by now, realised that IMO is, once again, down the toilet.
But while that professional civillian; Boomer, tries to fix everything, bear this in mind:

Since it seems some people can't live without IMO chat, I think a temporary replacement is needed

A PC-9 was seen on thursday in Bal' with gun and rocket pods fitted.
They are to do air-to-ground shooting in the next few weeks, at a floating target at sea, location presently unknown, [to me anyway].
Zulu, of Robot Wars, fame built the target,[Ch***t, it will probally fire back!! ]

Irish Air Corps / Cessna replacement.....
« on: March 28, 2004, 11:10:21 pm »
Based on something F. Malloy said:
The Cessna replacement, does it have to be a fixed wing, is there anything in it's required functions that prevents it's replacement by more helicopters?
Perhaps it would make economic sense to replace the Cessnas with [say] 3-4 more of whatever light helicopter 'they' are thinking about.

This has already been posted on IMO.

Irish Air Corps / How many helicopters?
« on: February 29, 2004, 09:36:49 pm »
This was also posted on IMO, but as there seems to be more Air Corps here, here goes:

How many??
Just to get away from fighters for a while, before I throw up!!
It looks like the Irish Air Corps might get troop transport helicopters, at long last.
So, I got a question, well several questions really:
1] How many bodies, minimum, is the desired amount to land in the LZ,[hot or cold] in the initial phase?
2] How many for follow up waves?
3] Now , how many helicopters of different types[including spares] to make this happen?
4] Finally, what about heavy wepons support and Casevac[spellin?]?

Since I typed this peice of verbage, a couple of other things have occured to me.
1] Is a helicopter that is suitable for troop-transport also suitable for general utility? you know, island relife, air ambulance, useless minister transport, ect?
2] What about training, will we need an additional trainer, or is it possable for something like a Blackhawk to be used for that?
3] Is it possable to get something suitable for shipboard [not necessarly our own ships] use, that can also fit all of the above?

Sorry if this rambles a bit.

Irish Air Corps / Tactical transport

Theres no comparison the C-130s engines would suck up our budget, and I doubt we could make a single machine work, the C-295 C-27J where considered because although they have lower payload capacity they are cheap enough to purchase a viable pair.
The C-295 is also less thirsty and less maintenance intensive.
