I belive the tender said " should be of military spec" not must be, I have the tender doucument somewhere here, when i remember where I put it '<img'> I will let you know, unless someone beats me too it..

Not neccesarly Sealion.

It's much cheaper to upgrade a chopper than buy new ones.

Look what half of Europe did with their F-16's and the Italians did with their F-104 ASA.

With the delivery of the first pair of 139 (hopefully) a few months away,have  techies and some pilots headed off yet for some covnersion training with agusta,now I know it might be a bit soon for the pilots ,but surly the techies have gone...has anyone heard anything?

every largish heli that passes over i'm looking at to see if it's an ab-139 over for training, i should know better!  'pilot_rolleyes'

did someone not mention that the techies were heading over to italy about 3-4 months ago?

THX for that IAS.  Very informative.  A sweet machine indeed and my projected winner for US Army LUH.  And I think the IAC will be happy.  As for the necessity for hydraulically boosted flight controls, I suspect there will be a back-up in the military versions of the 139 - what AW is calling the 149, which may or may not be incorporated in the IAC aircraft.  Probably not the initial four of what will likely be a total of eight - with the final four likely to be deployable 149's with hydraulic back-up, self-sealing fuel tanks, defensive aids suite and kevlar armor among other military improvements.  We can only hope.

so cant be long now until pics of the 139s start to make the rounds?!any more news on them yet?so about the naming of the heli have the corps said anything else about its selection yet or are they probably waiting until the unveiling of the choppers!? '<img'>

Tranche 2 of the IAC Tactical Helicopter order should be for  4-6 AW-149's as described below, suitable for overseas deployments and able to operate in conjunction with a Nordic+ Support Helicopter Force; Swedish Super Pumas, Finnish NH-90TT's and Norwegian 412 Arapaho's, with the Swedes and Norwegians also likely to field NH-90TT's.  The four AW-139's currently on order will be fine for training and domestic missions.

AgustaWestland's operation in Yeovil is to take the lead role in the development of the new AW149 7.5t multirole helicopter, as part of a relocation of the Italian helicopter manufacturer's military division to the UK.

The move was announced today by AgustaWestland chief executive Guiseppi Orsi at a ceremony in Yeovil to mark the signing of a strategic partnering arrangement between the manufacturer and the UK Ministry of Defence, and a contract for the development and manufacture of 70 Future Lynx helicopters for the army and Royal Navy. Orsi said the Finmeccanica subsidiary was in “preliminary discussions” with the UK's Department of Trade and Industry to secure funding to develop new technology for the AW149.

He said more details on the AW149 would be announced at next month's Farnborough air show. However, flightglobal.com has sourced the original specifications for the aircraft from the company's website.

AgustaWestland's managing director of military programmes Alan Johnston said the AW149 announcement “illustrated that we are finally one integrated company”. Eighteen months ago, GKN sold its 50% share in AgustaWestland to its joint venture partner Finmeccanica.
