Article from this month's issue of Connect:

Quote
274 Clear to Land

On August 11th, the Air Corp flew the first of four new AB139 utility helicopters due for delivery in November 2006 and spring 2007. The Helicopter, call sign 274, was handed over to Air Corp personnel in Milan, Italy, where they are undergoing flight and technical training in the Augusta training centre over the next few weeks, before they are flown home.

The Agusta Bell aircraft once fully deployed will be used in a variety of roles that will include troop carrying (seats for up to 12 troops), air ambulance and inland search and rescue. The helicopters will be equipped with a cargo sling that can carry a 105mm light gun, rescue hoist, two machine guns, abseiling/fast roping kit, night vision goggles capability, forward-looking infra-red camera provisions, and medvac/air ambulance kits.

People will be happy to know that there is no sign of orange on the aircraft in the pic that accompanies the article.

Scorpy,

What's the reason for the purchasing of crew body armour !!! Would this mean that crews could indeed find themselves been deployed overseas '<img'>

Hi all
Just to remind some people that this enthusiasm for doing things the Army way, with helicopters, is quite new.For a long time, there was a policy (unofficial or not) of non-co-operation with the soldiery. In some cases, there was even a point-blank refusal to allow helicopter assets to be made available to the Army, on sometimes spurious grounds of inability to carry out maintenance in the field, etc. At unit level, many individuals, either pilots or techs were quite personally hostile to the idea of any Army role for "their" helicopters ("We only do SAR").I remember one officer refusing to allow any ARMY lettering or designations of any kind to be,even temporarily, attached to "his" aircraft.Anyone with some pictures of the Alouettes in the 70s will remember the letters "ARMY" on the side..they weren't allowed to last long.I also remember a definitely negative attitude to wearing any kind of green combat-style of aircrew clothing.Where do you think the blue uniforms came from? It took a long campaign to even get the CoS to agree to the AC having a distinct uniform. The anti-Army mindset has persisted for a longtime and still runs within the Don.This new-found love of all things green is just that...new.As for the present GoC, I'm no fan of his, but he is a tough, no-nonsense individual, who is quite used to getting things his way.He is not afraid of challenging old mindsets and upsetting established practise if he thinks it'll get things moving. If the Donners are working with the Army more readily than ever, it's because he made it happen, not opposed it.Anything that generates more flight time for his pilots. He'll tell you that himself, if you ask.
I think he also has a point to prove with the 139s.If they turn out to be as useless-ish as the Dauphins, he'll be a dead duck and the AC's name will be mud. These new toys will have to be seen to work, so if that means co-operating with the "pongos" (as AC pilots are wont to call their Army colleagues), then so be it.
regards
GttC

It is quite noticeable that since the arrival of the new GOC AC, the air corps has been pushing a more military role, while PC was happier to meet the press and be seen hob-nobbing with the dignitaries.

It's great to see the Air Corps keeping up to date, as always, with new helicopters, however, these AW139s don't seem to be bristling with any passive missile warning receivers, so there would be no point sending them to any Theatre of operations. Check out RAF Pumas/Chinooks/Merlins, they've got warning receivers looking in all directions-'cos they know about being in hostile skies!

Rightly or wrongly GTTC's desciption of the Aer Corp pilot, tech's ( and I'm not taring everyone with the same brush) is probably one of the reasons why within the Irish aviation industry it is/was known as a gentlemans flying club.   'thumbsdown'

I am fairly sure that I was told that the delivery date was to be early in november for the first pair,[the 4th I think] and they were very firm that this date would be kept.
I posted this info on IMO, but have not been able to find the post in question, perhaps it was lost in that 'hicup' they had a few months ago?
