Ah the armed Reims - brings back great memories when the Northern Troubles were in full flight.  Many a time during that period I saw armed 172's flying in and out of Finer Camp!

Personally Silver I think that the IAC needs aircraft that would take out durg smugglar ships before they reach our shores.

Fouga,
There would be more IAC traffic over Galway is there was an IAC base along the Western Seaboard.  Why does everything have to be kept in the greater Dublin area?  Our western flanks need protection too!

Sealion, I prefer the Italian system of "guilty until proven innocent". Works much better. Do you not see the terrible destruction of society that smuggled drugs has done to our country. I say, keep them out of our country at all costs! We should  be like far east countries that give an automatic death sentence to all drug smugglers, no if ands or buts.  The "do gooders"  :banghead: have left this country in the mess it is in now. The IAC would a should have an important roel in "smoking" out the smugglers before they reach our shores.  I have no doubts aboout that!

Sorry Gnat, meant to write "North Strand" not  Short Strand!  Old age catching up!  At least there is a "north " connection.  Of course Dev sent up the Dublin Fire Brigade to help out  the inferno in Belfast after the German bombing of the city. :duh:

No photos but your book sounds very interesting. See my thread in the Irish Air Corps page about the IAC and the Emergency.  Have you any more information on the night the IAC was scrambled following foreign aircraft were picked up by search lights over the Dublin sky?

Keep us posted about the book. It sounds interesting! :applause:

Came across this interesting web page about the IAC and the Emergency:

http://www.csn.ul.ie/~dan/war/aercrpst.htm

Has anyone else got any interesting stories about this time? I remember reading somewhere (unfortunately cant remember the source) about the night when the Air Corps were scrambled to intercept unknown aircraft in the Dublin sky (thought to be German) possibly after the Short Strand bombings had taken place.  They had been picked up by search lights and if I can recall correctly, warning AA shots were let off.  Of course the IAC were dispersed around the country at that time.

I would of course add MATS to the list Hyper.  Many people around the world have only heard about IAC by seeing the flag of MATS!

Many happy returns Pink Panther. I think that is another area that should be expanded.  We are in tough times and it will get tougher  before it gets better I am afraid but it is now we should be planning, not when thingsgs are better and thaen only get planning!

Yes airlift is very important but so is air defence. As an independent country we should be seen to take this issue seriously!  Remember in the 1930s when Churchill warned about Germany's naval build up and the need for Britain to do the same? He was laughed out of Westminster!  Who was proven to be right?  Last year an Aer Lingus flight from the States was diverted to Shannon due to a bomb scare. We were not able to intervene. Luckily it was a hoax. But what if it was more serious or a hijacked plane heading for American sites in this country?:airforce_cry:

We could train those too Short!....for a small consideration of course!  I am around long enough to remember when part of Aer Lingus pilot training was done by the IAC in Gorm!
