Something interesting happening over Dublin on Sunday 15th September :applause:
-
I heard the announcement on the radio today :buttrock:
Is this the "definitive " line up or is there room for additions  It would of been nice to get the A380
Is this what the IAA had in mind ? :applause:

I must learn not to jump the gun and read websites properly before asking stupid questions :banghead:
30 aircraft
On top of Liberty hall ! now that's a prime viewing site :buttrock:
-
Will be nice if they all turn up and maybe worth a trip across the country. Problem is, I think caution should be exercised as none have been confirmed as participants. It says at the top "We are delighted to confirm* that the following aircraft have all been invited to participate at FlightFest"

Always with the negativity!

Haha! I really hope everything and more there turn up and it all goes well.

The B17 Flying Fortress is confirmed and I have had confirmation that the Grace Spitfire Tr9 ML407 ex Air Corps 162 is also coming and will be flown by Richard Grace.
Looking forward to seeing 162 again.
Tony K
-
I assume that all participants will be departing and arriving from Dublin Airport and if so, it would be worth heading over to Dublin airport on the day to capture good shots of the display aircraft rather than making the trip to the city

Looking forward to 162 in her "New Clothes" and the last time I saw a B-17 up close and personal was Fairyhouse I think 1980 or was it 81 it was a treat for my "conformation " .......
And Yes I was wearing my suit on the day too!

Depending on the aircraft, it's possible that Weston or Baldonnel may be used and some aircraft might just fly by without landing in Ireland at all.

See the Sally B is listed as departing on the 14th, so presume she'll be over-nighting in Ireland somewhere. This could be a nice little event. Not knowing Dublin that well, where would people suggest the best place to view would be? Also, are there Height restrictions over Dublin for flypasts like there are in London where the aircraft are so high that they don't make for great photos. I totally see that this event is not just for photographers so I'm not complaining, just asking, because it maybe better to go to where some are to be based.
-
Catalina have Flightfest down on their site. Arriving 14th, departing 16th. Nice.

The Catalina actually appears to be flying to Dublin directly from Leuchars on the 8th September

I can't for the life of me remember where I got this information from ,but the aircraft will flypast at 5min intervals the sensible option (I'm my opinion) would be to assemble at Dublin Airport and depart from there it woul be effectively would mean all aircraft flying a " circuit from Dublin assuming RNY 10 would be the active runway then climbing to 1000 ft past Howth head then right turn towards the entrance to the port
As for height restrictions the only major obstical along the quays is Liberty Hall and Samuel Becket Bridge
Also special permission would be givin on the day by the IAA to fly below 1000 but as you know it's all speculation the Irish weather is one issue. ???
-
One thing you need to remember is that the IAA are running this show, and they're the guys who make the rules... I'm sure whatever needs to be put in place will indeed be put in place.

Now I remember where I read the schedule and its just what I suggested
It quotes "Details of the event were announced today by the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Naoise Ó Muirí, Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport, Leo Varadkar, IAA Chairman, Ms. Anne Nolan, and a number of dignitaries.
Over 30 aircraft will fly through the city of Dublin as part of the Gathering Ireland 2013. They will set off from Dublin Airport, into Dublin Port and up along the River Liffey, as far as the Customs House. The sustained flypast through Dublin city centre will take two hours to complete and the flights will be sequenced at five minutes intervals.
" unquote
So the overseas aircraft may be hangared in Dublin

I see Vulcan XH558 has been added the list :buttrock: :buttrock: :buttrock:
But on the VTTS Display page it's down as 7th Sept Leuchars then 15th sept Southport with no mention of dublin so am I to be extremely chuffed or will I hold off on my enthusiastic YIIIPPEEEEEE until closer to the date
-
Southport to Dublin is about 20 minutes as the Vulcan flies and, as it is not expected to land here, it should easily be able to display at both venues.

Or better still..........
Fly to Dublin Airport , land , Re-fuel ,display at Dublin, then back to southport .....simples! :buttrock:

Just swiped this from the Independent .ie homepage
It quotes
"PILOTS will be using Dublin City landmarks such as the Poolbeg chimney stacks at Ringsend to guide mammoth passenger planes down the River Liffey as part of an aviation extravaganza.
Yet it will be business as usual at Dublin Airport thanks to a carefully laid-out air traffic control blueprint as more than 30 aircraft fly over the city as part of a two-hour-long flypast.
Two air traffic controllers will exchange their usual airport tower for the balcony of the PricewaterhouseCoopers building at Spencer Dock, overlooking the Liffey, to ensure they have a bird's eye view of the event.
Director of operations, Peter Kearney, said pilots will be looking for visual points around the city, in addition to using their hi-tech equipment, as they take to the skies on Sunday, September 15, for FlightFest, which is being staged by the Irish Aviation Authority and Dublin City Council as part of The Gathering tourism initiative.
Among the 30 aircraft taking the scenic route down the River Liffey will be the historic 1940s B-17 Flying Fortress, a 1941 Catalina Flying Boat, the last flying Avro Vulcan, which was famed for its role in the 1982 Falklands War, a C130 Hercules, an Aer Lingus Airbus A330 and 1936 DH 84 Dragon, and the Etihad Airbus 340, which carries 375 passengers.
The event is expected to attract 100,000 people to the city to line the banks of the Liffey for a close-up view

The latest information I have is that the Vulcan will fly from the UK, display then fly back again, it won't be landing.

TG that ugly, smoke emitting, fuel guzzling, heap of junk with the four primus stoves at the rere is not landing at Dublin.
The only proper aeroplane is the one with a propeller.
Ok Ok I'll put out the lights and pull the door behind me as I leave! :rotfl: :rotfl:
-
You and your props!
-
Both Vulcan pilots were staying at the same hotel as me at RIAT. They expressed great interest in overnighting in here. I suggested they land at Bal
-
Dreamliner ? Lancaster ? please tell me he hasn't made a error about the Lancaster ,or did he really mean to say was B-17
Here's IAA CEO Eamonn Brennan's Interview at Bray Air Spectacular July

Now, now no personal remarks, Oh most respected (rotund ) Leader.
To show that I am not totally intolerant I would stop to look at a Victor (but not that heap of Sh-one-T), even though it too has four primus stoves up it's ass. Despite that it is a really nice looking aircraft. :stirthepot:
Ok. OK I'm gone.

Why can't the IAA and other interested parties not invite any of the above aircraft to Display in a proper Airshow the September date would be suitable since most if not all the aircraft may be available
Please Discuss......

The real aircraft (Spitfire of course) is not coming, what a disappointment. Not much use going now, might just feck off to the west of Ireland for a few pints.

Far too logical for the powers that be! Hope to see it at some stage - would probably have to be EINN for the A380 though (not a problem) :applause: :airforce_laugh:

Will the A 380 be making refuelling stops at Shannon as part of the planned US flights ?

Not likely, they have a good range.

Swiped from YouTube basically a "display Pilots briefing video for all pilots taking part in Flight Fest
some interesting points worth noting :
All aircraft will get 2 runs :buttrock:
Baldonnell & Weston will also be departure points as well as Dublin
All UK inbound may be put on a southern hold before commencing display
It's all explained on the video including ATC FREQ
This YouTube link is very comprehensive and could prove helpful when deciding where you will position yourself on the day

I'm off to Raf Leuchars this weekend and seen that the VULCAN has cancelled due to a fuel leak in one off the Vulcan's tanks (No7)
A worrying development in the run up to to Flight Fest :banghead:

Hi,
Anyone know if both IAC Casa 235s will be displaying at flight-fest ? Both aircraft have been flying in formation over the past few days
-
That'd be a pretty clear sign :D And I'd be disapppointed if the 3-ship PC9 wasn't actually a 4-ship on the day!

Nice to see the IAC :ireland: are thinking outside the box :buttrock:
I'm REALLY looking forward to see what their planned display will involve
Are any of the IAC jets doing any formations ???? A repeat of the Easter commemorations flypast over O'Connell St a few years back spring to mind :applause:

Intrigued Claudel....smoke???

Smoke...hope not, that would be bad news! Afterburners won't be working properly!

Pods. Saw the pics on Flikr today. Should set up some floating targets in the Liffey!

What a bummer but not totally unexpected
We have now received a report on the state of the leaking No.5 tank from specialists FPT Industries in Portsmouth.
Given that more than one leak and other signs of deterioration were found, and that the tank is itself over 30 years old, we have concluded that, if repaired, the tank would remain vulnerable to further leaks.
We have therefore decided that repair of the tank would not prove economical and, if reinstalled on the aircraft, could prove to be unreliable.
There is no airworthy spare available; we have accordingly commissioned a new tank to be manufactured immediately.
With an estimated 16 week lead time for manufacture, we are very sorry to announce that it will not be possible to return the aircraft to flight again in 2013.
XH558 has therefore sadly made her last public appearance this year.
We now wish to concentrate on ensuring we are able to secure sufficient funding to return XH558 to the air for another two seasons.
:banghead:

Anyone have a link to how it can be watched online?

Had a great day :applause:
I hope this becomes a regular event it would be great if we had the lineup at an airport in a proper air display :ireland:

Well done and thanks to all involved in getting the day planned and run. Very enjoyable. A pitty the weather was a bit rough and not all the scheduled aircraft made it, but it was still a really great spectacle.
I watched from Clontarf, and had a great view with the mountains and Poolbeg in the background plus the added benefit of being able to see the aircraft heading to and then in the southern hold before their approach. The surprise extra bonus was the Van's loitering in the area, the Strikemaster and then Hunter and Sabre pair directly overhead heading east before turning back up the river and finally seeing the A380 do its wing wiggle as it climbed out over the south City following its final pass.
 :buttrock: :applause: :applause:
