Title: Heavy lifters at Baldonnel?
Post by: Dublin Spotter on November 03, 2004, 11:35:48 am
I was wondering what the largest aircraft to visit the "Don" has been. By largest I mean by way of MTOW (Max Take off Weight)

I believe it was the C124 Globemaster II. Several of them took troops down to the Congo.

A Boeing 707 visited BAL in the late 90s - would it have had a greater mtow than the Globey? :)

A quick Google search throws up the following stats on the MTOW of large types that have landed at Baldonnel:

Boeing 707-320B           MTOW 333,600lb
C-124                          MTOW 216,000lb
CL-44                          MTOW 210,000lb

Of course the 707 that visited EIME was probably empty, so the comparison is to a degree academic.

Just got home and grabbed a look at the Air Corps book. It states that the C124 was the largest plane ever to land at Baldonnel.
