Interesting to see the addition of a new entrance door as well! ;)

Yes - a very nice display with many really high-quality models on show.  That 707 won two prizes, as far as I know!

Some video footage here also:

Irish Aviation History / New book: Military Aviation In Northern Ireland
« on: September 02, 2013, 07:52:40 pm »
I picked up this recently published book in Eason's (Dublin).

http://www.colourpointbooks.co.uk/more_details.php?id=1620

At a very reasonable price of €12.85, it is a high-quality illustrated history of military aviation in NI, written by two authors who know their subject well.  The early years, WW2 and busy post-war period are covered and while some of the photos may be familiar, there are many that I have not seen before.  I look forward to seeing the companion volume on civil aviation which is also due.

Southport to Dublin is about 20 minutes as the Vulcan flies and, as it is not expected to land here, it should easily be able to display at both venues.

I assume that all participants will be departing and arriving from Dublin Airport and if so, it  would be worth heading over to Dublin airport on the day to capture good shots of the display aircraft rather than making the trip to the city

Depending on the aircraft, it's possible that Weston or Baldonnel may be used and some aircraft might just fly by without landing in Ireland at all.

It's not clear from the auction whether only one aircraft is being sold.  They could be trying to offload more than one of the Air Corps machines.

Looks like a piece of dust or a hair on lens, or in the camera?

Irish Air Corps / Re: Air Corps last Beech Super King Air for sale
« on: October 02, 2012, 08:33:43 pm »
The new "Flying in Ireland" magazine reports that the King Air has been sold to a US dealer for parts and will be dismantled at Baldonnel.  At the time of its retirement it had over 16,000 flying hours to its credit.

I've seen something similar, if not the same video, elsewhere and I think the aircraft may be a DanishAF one.

Irish Air Corps / Re: New Air Corps DVD
« on: September 20, 2012, 08:26:29 pm »
I picked this DVD up at Baldonnel on the day of the recent Fouga book launch.  It is a very interesting and well put-together production.  At over four hours in length, it will probably take most people a few sittings to watch.

For the most part the film footage is of good quality and relevant to the aircraft being described, though in a couple of cases some artistic licence has to be taken in the absence of footage (e.g. Spitfire trainers are shown during some of the Seafire discussion).  It looks like the RTE archives and other sources, including private collections, have provided some of the material, which includes colour sequences of the Vampires, Provosts, Puma and Doves.  What comes across particularly is the pride and professionalism of the Air Corps personnel, past and present, in their achievements, as well as the role that Baldonnel has playing in several significant aviation events over the years. The section on film-making in Ireland in the 1960s is of particular note also, with good colour footage of the various WW1 biplane replicas used.

Highly recommended and excellent value. :ireland:

Shameless Promotion / Re: New Book: Fouga Magister- An Irish Perspective
« on: September 17, 2012, 10:11:16 pm »
I very mnch agree and endorse what Tony has said.  While the Magister as a type is well-known, its origins and design history probably are not, and these aspects are well-covered.  For modellers the close-up photos, diagrams and explanations make the book a valuable resource, even if you don't intend to represent an Irish aircraft.  I would strongly recommend the book to anyone with an interest in the Air Corps or the Fouga Magister  (or in both!).

Irish Aviation History / Irish Defence Forces Archives on Flickr
« on: May 08, 2012, 09:47:21 pm »
The DF Archives have begun to post to Flickr images on which they are looking for additional infomation from the public in relation to people, place and equipment depicted.  There is little enough aviation content as yet but aircraft do feature in some of the photos, particularly those covering the Irish UN Congo mission.  It is probably worth keeping an eye on.
