Pilatus

Shannon definitely cannot take B-52s - that is a media myth.  They require particularly wide taxiways etc. because of the outrigger wheels under the outer wings.

----

Five former French AF Douglas Skyraiders passed thru Dublin airport in 1977 after being sold on the civilian market in the USA.  Technically no longer military but they were very memorable for those who witnessed them.

Shannon Airport hosted some rare military types in the 1950s, when diversions for technical reasons were required.  Among the visitors were a USAF B-47 and I think some F-100s.  It all depends how far back you want to go and what is meant by "exotic".

Hi all
My vote goes to the Antonov-26 of the former East German AF. I marshalled it to it's parking spot at one of the Don Airshows and recieved a bottle of Grolsch from the crew for my pains.Thirsty work, that marshalling! They also gave me a very detailed tour of the aircraft. It had a crew of 1 West German and about six East Germans.Nice bunch and delighted to be in the "new" Luftwaffe.

There was also a German ECM Hansa Jet (at the same show?) which was a very welcome sight.  For the scale of the various events held at Baldonnel, and given our location relative to the rest of Europe, the shows there have succeeded in attracting some very nice visitors.

The US Air Force withdrew the F-111s from Lakenheath in 1992, what I meant was that they LEFT from Lakenheath. I can only go on what the commentator said. Two F-111s displayed at what was known as the 'Salthill Harp Lager Festival' in 1995. QED.

Hi all
Many moons ago(1984?), a VFW-Fokker 614 came to the Don, bearing the then President of West Germany. The pilot was a former Starfighter pilot, who took off and made a very, very steep turn past the tower as he left.I'd say the people on board were quite green about the gills after that.

What is the longest distance any aircraft has travelled in order to take part in an Irish air show ?

U.S navy P-3 Orions were frequent weekend visitors to the don during the early 90's. They used to bring the families of American sailors based in Iceland to Dublin on shopping trips. Also, did any of ye know about the S-3 Viking that landed at the don a few days before the arrival of the JFK in '96??
It came in in the early hours of the morning to pick up a couple of Aircorps officers and bring them out to the carrier off Cork somewhere.

GttC,
I think this is the Antonov, former East German Air Force, you mentioned at Baldonnel. I thought that it was  a very nice aircraft and did you notice it had all script in Russian.
Regarding the Ju88 incident all crew survived in fact the pilot Paul Stormer passed away only last December.

Hi there
Pilatus, it's an FBW HansaJet, which was unusual in that it featured a forward-swept wing.It wasn't a commercial success, so the production run were given/sold to the Luftwaffe, who used them for electronic warfare training for Tornado backseaters and suchlike. Students sit in the cabin and operate equipment that is designed to mimic the kit in the combat jets and attempt to jam radars, decoy SAMs,etc. They could also be used to "sample" other people's radars, for future jamming purposes.

Hi Fouga,

Silver's  original question was: "What is the longest distance any aircraft has travelled in order to take part in an Irish air show ?"
New Jersey - Salthill still stands (C141 Starlifter), the fact that it landed in Shannon after the display for a "splash & dash" & a photo-op is irrelevant.

Maybe not the most exotic, but the most unusual I saw in Bal was a 707 that flew in many years ago for a film. The crew did a go-around first time, then a right hand circuit to 29 which allegedly broke windows all over the south city.  The runway was short enough for the landing and take off, but the taxiways only left a matter of inches to spare, especially in the turns.

Freespeed, I remember that 707 also.  However I think the "broken windows" story is probably a bit fanciful.  I lived under the Dublin departure path for years and many a 707, DC-8 or Trident made a noisy departure, but as they were doing well under Mach 1 at the time, no windows were broken!

Hi all
The 707 was one of McEvaddy's Omega Air aircraft and was formerly of Olympic Airways. It had been cleared VFR across the city, hence it's arrival at 1000' (or less!).It was in Baldonnel for a film.
The Ju52 was in for the filming of the opening sequence of "Caught in a Free State". It was in such bad condition that the crew had great difficulty in starting the engines and took a couple of hours to taxy from the ramp to the end of the runway. One crewman had to stand in the cabin operating a hand-pump to keep the fuel system going. The centre engine's exhaust pipe fell off after take-off and the aircraft ended up in Dublin Airport. It eventually had it's tail torn off in a gale and was, much later, dismantled and roaded out.
The Storch was a French-built MS500 Criquet with a radial engine. It was painted in the colours of JG-54, I think.

Correct GTTC!!!
It was a MIG microlight, but a MIG none the less! Nobody said it had to be a fighter jet!!!
Sorry Turkey! Ive been on the ramp here for many a year and there isnt many, if any , visiting aircraft that get by me.

How was it a Mig Microlight when it shows him in a Figther Jet Cockpit with Russian Markings or whatever along the side of it? Maybe the Pic was not taken at Baldonnel?

Hi Tony, I remember that Ju52, and yes it was a right state! didn't it get 'grounded' for quite a while during the filming? I remember some of the 'Donners got bit parts in the programme, Tom Carroll was a steward, wasn't he?
Any idea if I could obtain a cd of the series? I remember it was very well done. Some very funny bits, though not necessarily for the 'spys'!.

The centre engine sprayed oil on the windscreen it seems. An unfortunate member of the crew had to regularly hang out and wipe the oil off so the pilot could see through it.

They put the Junk in Junkers. As good an aircraft as the C47 it seems, if it wasn't for the fact most examples and factories were destroyed by the allies in the later stages of the war, it would have been the main passenger aircraft of the early airline days of the late 40s and 50s. Instead the C47's civilianised brother the DC3 became the workhorse.

The picture of the Ju52/3m posted is not I believe a Ju52/3m but a CASA 352 the particular aircraft was built in 1950 in Spain and now flies with PW1340 engines in the USA. France also built a version known as the AAC I Toucan, it was one of these that crashed on Djouce Mountain on 12 August 1946. The British used the Ju52/3m after the war for a period as a passenger aircraft with BEA. The aircraft at Baldonnel used for the filming was a CASA built aircraft so really a 352 and yes John it was grounded at Baldonnel for a long period. I couldn't believe the rust around the flying controls.

What about the Sikorsky S92 that visited Bal and also made a trip to Sligo, that was pretty exotic considering ther were only a few flying at the time.

Also i remember about 4-5 yrs ago 2 ex Israeli A4 Skyhawks landing at Shannon on their way to America. Both did a really cool flypast along the length of the runway before landing.

We had some exotic stuff in when they ran a competition for precision landing. Tony, didn't they actually land on the taxiway beside 29/11?

Hi all
The "MiG" microlight is not marketed as a MiG product, but it is built in a MiG factory using fighter-grade materials, including titanium and is built to a far higher standard than many Western microlights. There are at least two more, still in crates, in Ireland. The owner has allowed Air Corps pilots to fly it....No-one stated exactly where Lt. Brennan was sitting in the MiG-29.It wasn't in Baldonnel, at any rate.

hi all
Eagles are deadly enough but not invincible.Wasn't there an intercept by two Jaguars of a four-aircraft formation that "Fox-2'd" a pair of intercepting Eagles? Also, they have, like other fighters, have had a hard time intercepting well-flown low-level attackers in Red Flag.

Its also good to note that at Red Flag and Various exercises Fast Jet pilots have had a hard time trying to out turn an A10 only to have the A10 getting the first gunlock on them! Fact.

BTW i am still trying to get a good pic of LT Cormac Brennan in that MiG, The MiG he is sitting in is from the Czech Republic and the report on it is done by Kmdt Kevin byrne, the article also stated that the pic was taken at RAF Brawdy and that there were some rumours that AC pilots got hops in RAF Hawk AC after the show but that has yet to be proved! :D

It happened all right ... as far as I know a flight of Canberras on a delivery flight from the UK to Ecuador. I recall seeing a plaque in Dunmore mentioning the episode ...

The Ecuadorian Air Force Canberra force landed on 22 August 1962 at Lissybroder, Dunmore (M.Burke's field) It was one of three returning to Uk for overhaul. The pilot Lt.Col Escobar, the navigator Lt.Jose Carrera and one Raymond C Herman were uninjured. It was dismantled and eventually taken to UK. One of the other Canberras encountered trouble but made it into Ballykelly.

Thanks 202, HeIII exotic Hess? not so sure if the word exotic is quite appropriate for the thread.I would rather use the word unusual. Certainly in Ireland such aircraft were unusual but then not being an air minded country probably any aircraft in Ireland was unusual. What about the Short Flying Boat/Mayo composite for instance? and the number of aircraft involved in the King's Cup Air Race in the thirties who visited Baldonnel. There was the Junkers W34 and Fitzmaurice and there was Cobham.....it goes on and on.
