UK Air Shows / Accommodation for RIAT 08
« on: May 07, 2008, 10:53:34 pm »
Hi all,

Heading to RIAT for the first time this year and very excited!  :tounge: Problem is I don't know where to stay and I know its a little late to be looking. Flying into Bristol and getting the train to Swindon. Thinking shuttle bus from Swindon is handy so hoping to stay around there. Any suggestions greatly appreciated?

Cheers..

Anyone know if they'll be anything in Carnmore tomorrow and is there any chance of getting in to see them? The Casa arrived today alright.

Irish Air Corps / Dealing with problems

Good idea but will probably never happen unfortunately...

Can you really see Bertie and Enda ever agreeing on anything?

And even if by chance there ever is a multi-party agreement I'm sure the "Hippie" party, I mean the Green's will kick up a racket.... but then again who care's what they think!?

Irish Air Corps / Canadian F-18's

Mistake duly noted on the Hercules 'Snapper' - thanks for clearing that up.

But I still stand by what I said about the security. I landed in Shannon around 15.20 and other than the Special Forces banged up jeep and Civil Defense bus ( '<img'> ) I couldn't see any Gardai and we disembarked our plane only roughly 150 yards from the plane - not meaning anythin by this 'Snapper', just my observations on the Monday afternoon.

Irish Air Corps / Canadian F-18's

Was in Paris last weekend for the match and when we landed in Shannon (in a brand new Ryanair 737-800, lovely plane) I was pleasantly surprised to see 5 F-18's and a Herc parked a stones throw away! I thought they were American flying to or from Iraq or somewhere but found out later they were Canadian F-18's which encountered re-fuelling difficulties on their way from Spain to Canada. The C-130 was infact a refuelling tanker; it's refuelling probe failed to extend and therefore forced them to land at Shannon. But what really surprised me was the lack of security around them. From what I could see there was an old Army jeep and a Civil Defence bus but not a soul around from either or any airport staff other than those dealing with our plane! Very slack on Shannon's part. I could easily and so wanted to go over and have a right look but thought it best not to. I think they took off fairly soon after that because going out the road home their lights were flashing and cockpits open.

Irish Air Corps / Eyesight Requirement
« on: September 15, 2004, 04:17:58 pm »
Really need a straight answer on this folks....

For years now I've considered going for an air corp cadetship and even now starting an apprenticeship I'm still going to go for it next year.

But MOST unfortunately I've been blessed with bad eyesight which I curse everyday!  Now I'd be more than willing to correct my eyesight with laser surgery at whatever cost just so I could realise my dream.

Would this rule me out though? Will the air corp accept laser surgery? Or should I face up and forget about.

Any help most appreciated.

Air Corps Careers / Air Corp Recruit's?
« on: July 21, 2004, 11:59:38 am »
Hey Flyboy,

Was doing Industrial Engineering in GMIT. I didn't so much hate the course but hated the maths! Was never much good at maths but said I'd try it but to no surprise I failed (granted I didn't try very hard).

I don't think I'll do another course cause I'm not to suited to college life. More of a hands-on kinda guy. Like to get dirty!!!

So it looks like an apprenticeship or the Defence forces.

Quote (John K @ 09 July 2004,15:37)
Yeah well, Sully, you must be keen on them as you've got the Red Arrows for your avitar! And imagine the stuff that'd be in Baldonnel if we'd stayed part of the UK!!!!!(What d'you reckon Cygnet!!!)

How could anyone not like the Red Arrows!? I have nothing against the RAF or the British for that matter. I just hate seeing Ireland coloured in the Union Jack. Like in the film 'Eurotrip'. Disgraceful... 1916 people!!!

Irish Air Corps / Naval Heli Ops in Ireland -
« on: July 10, 2004, 09:49:30 am »
Since their finally investing in new heli's, why dont the DoD set up a small dedicated naval air squadron?

They could use it to investigate any 'blibs' on the radar when the CASA's arn't airborne or are otherwise engaged.

I know the air corp and have stopped SAR operations (bar emergency's I presume) but couldn't the navy operate from their ships if they were nearby. Would probably get there quicker... I'm saying probably cause' it's a an educated guess?

Air Corps Careers / Air Corp Recruit's?
« on: July 07, 2004, 01:00:05 pm »
Been thinking of joining the Air Corp as a recruit for a while now but need some convincing!? Tried the whole college thing last year and didn't suit me. Hated my course.

What sort of jobs would I be able to do as a recruit? What sort of opportunities, perks, etc.?

Would being a recruit help if I went for a cadetship in the near future?

Any advice, info or opinions would be most appreciated lad or ladies?
