Los Halcones- the Chilean aerobatic display team and Patrouille Suisse now seem to be confirmed although not on the RIAT site I might add, but on other sites.  Three good display teams for a good start, roll on July! thumbsup

Hi Joey, nice to see your name up again.  I could'nt see it not attending unless something serious happens with it.  The other airshow that weekend is Duxford and if they had to choose I would think that they would go for RIAT as it is far bigger,  even though I suppose it could easily do both.  Are you heading for Fairford again this year?  Dave (Fouga) will be joining us this year.

Hi Vulcan

Hope to be at both days this year!!
And you were right! About being hooked it was brilliant last year the weather didn't get in the way, hoping for better weather this year!

Farnborough 2008 has the Vulcan booked for one of their display days.
Have you been on the Farnborough site yet?
i know that it caters for more civilian aircraft and if memory serves me, the last time RIAT 2006 & Farnborough 2006 the Osprey made an appearance at Fairford so who knows what surprises this year will hold!!
Anyway look forward to July!
can't wait :rotfl:

Unforunately there seems to be a few major UK airshow clashes this summer.RIAT/Duxford and RAF Waddington/RNAS Yeovilton seem to be the main ones. Not good planning :oh: but I also believe there is some major discruntlement regarding the Ticket System for RIAT this year.

I have never been to RIAT and don`t intend to go anytime soon-I`m not a fan of monster airshows-too many elbows and people with BIG HATS getting in the way of photography! Grrr!!!

I always found at RIAT that the static displays have the fences back far enough that you can get excellent photos with nobody in the way.

Even if you need to take a few extra steps back, as a rule people wait till you have your photo taken before they pass you. The flying displays are to the north of the runway usually, and no matter where you are on the ramp, you'll have a good view of proceedings. If you want a better view, there used to be terraced seating along the flight line.

And then there is the open topped bus.

Now I have to say I haven't been to RIAT since 1994. They started moving it from Fairford then and I lost interest.

Canadian Forces CF-18 Demo and USAF F-22 Demo both have Fairford listed on their 2008 schedules.  Fantastic, roll on July.  First time in Europe for the Raptor.

Seem to be rumours going around that An Osprey and the Mig 29 OVT may be at Farnbourgh, which means that there is a good chance of them being at Fairford.  We should know on Tuesday there is to be a press announcement or something on participants at FI.  Fingers crossed. :airforce_cheesy:

Camping there was the Job. Wake up to the sound of A B52 on approach over your head. Stick the head out of the tent to watch the oddest and noisiest arrive. And after the show, watch in comfort as they leave again. The show is 2 days, but I remember getting 5 out of it in 1994...

Hi All
Has any member driven to Fairford RIAT before ?
I’m Flying from Dublin to Bristol(Arriving Sat 07.30,) staying at a hotel near Bristol Parkway?
Then I thought to myself why don’t I rent a car! And drive to the show then I was informed (by a couple from Fairford) that I was mad!!!!!
Has any member any words of wisdom how long would I expect to be sitting in traffic? Bearing in mind won’t get going until 07.45 aprox

Actually Now that I’ve read this I think the train is a better option don't ye think?
Title: Re: RIAT 2008
Post by: Irish251 on June 14, 2008, 07:51:24 pm
It's not a bad drive normally but you have to (a) drive though Bristol itself and (b) take your chances as to what the airshow traffic is like.  You might be better getting to Swindon by public transport and then getting a bus coach into the show.
Title: Re: RIAT 2008
Post by: joey1 on June 14, 2008, 08:21:06 pm
Hi short Finals

Yep think so!!

Did the Train & Coach thing last year ‘Lucky enough to get B+B last year in Swindon (Big Thanks to Vulcan) not so lucky this year though! Left it a bit late!!

Bristol parkway Rail station is roughly 800mtrs from the hotel and I just thought it would be fun to drive to the show
then at the end off the show I wouldn’t have to race back to catch busses N trains but then today
I was informed that I could be stuck in at Latton  just off A419 about 2 to 3 hrs due to traffic heading into the Blue car park and ill have two kids with me
So maybe Hassle Free Rail and coach to be then!!!!

Thanks anyway hope to see other members there on Sat (if you make yourself Known)
Won’t be long now looking forward to it!!!!!

Hi Vulcan
Nice to here from you again
Vulcan XH558 is still down for RIAT 2008 but its still awaiting CAA certification for displays is that correct?
Nice to see IAC CN_ 235M representing us
I was wondering was there any word on the OVT MIG  or even The Osprey’s visit to Farnborough
Anway still a cracking line up for this year

Not long to go!!!!!

Title: Re: RIAT 2008
Post by: Vulcan on June 23, 2008, 04:00:55 pm
Joey

The Vulcan is still touch and go weather or not it will make RIAT or not.  She was up again today for a training flight for one of the pilots.  A display Authorisation (DA) has still to be done yet and then there is all the paper work from the CAA.  The weather is forcast to be not too bad this week so fingers crossed, and hope the CAA can push the red tape through a bit faster than usual.  Suppose there is a chance she might be there on static, that would be something, but nothing compared to seeing her fly!

Ospreys are out aparently.  The OVT? not too sure as the type of Mig 29 appearing at Farnborough has not even  been confirmed as yet, and there are rumours that whatever it is, it won't be coming to Fairford.  Any flying Mig 29 or the Vulcan would certainly be the icing on the cake of what is looking like a cracking show.

Can't wait, roll on the 12th!

Are you using the grandstand this year?  We have seats for the Saturday.

350 aircraft so far with 20 herc's and 12 F-16s, you just would not see that anywhere else.
Title: Re: RIAT 2008
Post by: joey1 on June 23, 2008, 11:58:31 pm
Hi Vulcan
Last year I got grandstand seats too on the day , and this year  ill have my son & nephew with me
id  get the top row seats for best photo shots cos last year we got the bottom row of  seats and a lot of people walking by wasn’t helping getting any shots

A good selection of vintage aircraft on display too
Plus royalty being present I’m sure the RAF won’t disappoint

The line up is amazing; the kids will have a ball with all the static on display just the weather to pray for is all that’s left to do!!

Apart from the obvious VulcanXH558 is there any other aircraft your eager to see/Photograph?

Title: Re: RIAT 2008
Post by: Vulcan on June 24, 2008, 09:44:13 am
Apart from the obvious Rapter, there are a few that I would like to see and photograph.  The Canadian CP-140 Aurora and CF-18 Hornet, the USN super hornet, any Mig and Czech Gripen.  The teams are a bit over board this year IMO, but looking forward to the Halcones and the Brazillians as they use computerised digital dot matrix with their smoke to write the name of the air show in the sky, so lets allpray for clear skies.  Saw the Indian Sarang helicopter team at Biggin Hill a couple of weeks ago and was'nt very impressed with them, quite average really, but something you don't get to see,so in that respect worth seeing.  Saw the Breitling team at Biggin as well, though they were pretty good.

As far as seats are concerned, you have to get there early to get the top tiers of the grandstand.  That will be our first port of call, then we can take it easy.

Hi Vulcan

Oh Yeah I Forgot about the F22s cool!!!!
Hope they don’t just do “Flybys” and go all out to impress

No Frecce Tricolori this year !
Apart from the Red Arrows the Frecce Tricolori were my favourite formation team

I thought the grandstand tickets were pre allocated if you purchased them online? So
Is it a case of “1st come 1st bum on your favourite seat?
Title: Re: RIAT 2008
Post by: Vulcan on June 25, 2008, 09:26:35 pm
Forgot about the F-22's ???   There's 3 of them coming, 1 for flying, one for static, as some are saying anyway, and a spare.  The flying display is being flown by the fella that is doing it in all those youtube clips and the official clip, can't think of his name at the moment.

I'm afraid that the grandstand tickets are not pre-allocated which is a shame.  We will be leaving the B&B at about 7am to make sure we get a reasonable seat.

The Frecce are very good, I was very impressed with them last year, the first time I had seen them.  I think they are doing a show in France that week end.

Did you read the news on the RIAT home Page about the Vulcan’s pending participation at this years show?
it’s still a possibility  I understand the even organizers are bending over backward to have XH558 at the show whether flying or otherwise

as for the grandstand seats I was a bit taken back as to the first come first sit  arrangements given the high  price

I must invest in a decent camera I don’t know much about what type is suitable
SLR type seems to be the buzz word something with dummy minded photographer like myself in mind he he!

Hi Vulcan

 A-380 Brilliant!!!!
Probably the only time we’ll get to see the giant of the skies unless a cargo version makes an Irish visit

I see their splitting some of the Acts due to time constraints & commitments elsewhere pity I could only be at the sat show only
Its going to be a 9 Hour Display this has to be a record breaker for duration.
Still you won’t hear me complain best value for money

Joey if you go straight to the grandstand you may still be in with a chance.  My understanding is that they hold on to a few for sale on the day, but they do go fairly fast.

On a slightly gloomier note! :(

Just had a look at www.metcheck.com
It’s not looking to good for Fairford on the weekend 12th&13th . Sunday seems to be fairing off better out of the two days
 just my luck   :banghead:

Hi SF

Nice pics  :applause:
How did the pilot(s) fair off  as regards the display?
It would be nice to see her in formation with Red Arrows like they did for Concorde

Probably asking a bit much

Also a bit of an improvement regarding the weather for both days at RIAT if you believe SKY NEWS

Anyway roll on the weekend !!!!

How did the pilot(s) fair off  as regards the display?

I'm not quite sure what you mean by this, but as they were both experienced Vulcan aircrew they had no problems.  In fact the co-pilot for the display was Martin Withers, who commanded the first succcessful Vulcan Black Buck mission against Port Stanley airfield in 1982.  The aircraft used on that mission, serial XM607, is now preserved at RAF Waddington.  As for the Vulcan's display routine, it is very nice but it's clear that conservation of airframe and engine life requires that it is treated a good deal more gently than in the energetic displays some of us will remember from the Vulcan's days in military service.

Title: RIAT 2008 - Saturday show cancelled
Post by: Irish251 on July 11, 2008, 08:56:06 pm
Too bad for anyone planning to attend RIAT on Saturday - it has been cancelled:

AIR TATTOO CANCELLED SATURDAYDue to the unusually heavy rainfall during the past 72 hours, a decision has been made by the organisers of the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire to cancel the airshow on Saturday, July 12.

The cancellation of the airshow on Saturday follows a sustained period of heavy rainfall that has resulted in waterlogged conditions not only in the public car parks but also on the airfield itself. The decision was taken following consultation with the police and other safety services.

Air Tattoo Director Tim Prince said it was the first time the Air Tattoo had ever had to cancel one of its days in its 38-year history.

“It is with great regret that we had to take the decision to cancel the airshow on the Saturday but the safety of the public is paramount.

“When it became clear that we could not guarantee the safety of the many thousands of people who had bought tickets for Saturday, the decision to cancel was straightforward.

“We are aware of the inconvenience our decision will have on the many thousands of people who have bought tickets for the Saturday but the potential risk of there being significant difficulties on the roads, in our car parks on the airbase itself were too high.”

It is anticipated that the show will be held on Sunday but it will be only for holders of tickets valid for Sunday. A decision in respect of this will be announced by 4pm on Saturday.

Please note that Saturday tickets will not be valid for Sunday.

Refund details for tickets bought for Saturday, July 12, can be found on the Royal International Air Tattoo website at www.airtattoo.com . For further enquiries contact refunds@rafcte.com

Yer, what a bummer!  We heard it last night in the B7B.  Hopefully tomorrow will go ahead but its touch and go.  Joey1, my heart goes out you, seeing as you are only doing the one day as far as I know.  We have just come up to London for the day and will be heading out to Heathrow shortly to, at least see some aircraft today!

Sunday's show is now off also - intensely disappointing, I'm sure, for those who have travelled for the show.

Hi all

Travelled to see an Airshow, ended up going to the zoo!!!! I could have gone to the Phoenix Park and saved a bundle ……. :rotfl:

Sorry just me letting off steam folks not long home

Seriously I totally understand that safety MUST come first, but it looks like a sign of things to come regarding the weather although Saturday and Sunday ironically the weather turned out to be fine the damage was already done Thursday and Friday.

I’m no landscape artist but I’d say a serious lack of drainage was partly the blame and this is probably going to be an on-going problem so maybe a change of venue in the future or tackle the waterlog issue would be the first thing on the agenda before organising next year's RIAT..... :(

Has any other member any other woes  or ideas or should I just keep my opinions to myself :-X

Torential downpours just seem to be part of our Summer weather now...Newtownards Airshow had to be cancelled a few years back for the very same reason as RIAT.
Drainage can only do so much-A sudden mass downpour is always going to cause massive problems at airfields-by their very nature they are generally flat places and therefore the water has no where to go.

Belfast International Airport`s terminal has suffered flooding for the past 3 years in the summer and the terminal had to be closed for a time.

I don`t think there is any easy fix for this problem other than trying to use paved car park area`s,or run shuttle buses if some suitible park and ride scheme could be used.

Hi Paul
I remember last year Newtownards was threatened with cancellation because of the same problem but the airfield managed to dry just enough to put on the show

Last year Fairford had a fair amount of rain it wasn’t as bad though still the signs are there that our summers have changed, so your suggestion of paved carparks is probably the way to go. I don’t know if the RAF own the lands that provide the carpark facilities ???

As for shuttle busses they already provide shuttle busses from Swindon Train station for spectators who travel on foot, I did it last year and it was great !!!

I think it would be a logistical nightmare not to have on-site carparks as well as try to provide park n ride facilities to deal with the huge numbers of spectators  it would mean a strict flying time constraint to allow spectators gain access to the show
It would have to be the trade off

I suspect that emergency vehicles having difficulty gaining access to any of the fields   was another reason as to the cancellations

Id say a lot of spectators would have headed to Duxford for the Flying Legends Airshow
To try salvage the day sometimes airshow clashes can have it's advantages

VULCAN did you get to Duxford cos id say you were mighty P****d off too given the fact you booked both days :banghead:

Thanks Vulcan for your thoughts earlier in the thread ! I'll probably focus on Duxford in Sept or October

!Gotta get my fix whatever it takes!!!!!! :'(
travel wise Duxford seems to be easily accessible

Hi all

A Q&A session was posted on the RIAT homepage detailing the reasons for the cancellation of this year’s RIAT 2008

My suspicions were right about the Emergency access and why a park n Ride facility was not an option

Just click on the link below

Here's hoping for a better outcome next year folks!!!!!
