Title: New Air Corps EC135s - First pictures
Post by: Frank on September 30, 2005, 06:19:20 pm
Hi Guys,

I've just got my hands of the first pictures of both of the new Air Corps EC135's.  Both heli's are still wearing their temporary German civil test reg and markings, the Air Corps reg & roundels have yet to be applied.

Medium sized pictures are below, click here to see the full size pictures.

Regards,

Frank.

Are they different versions??

Look at the skids.

The first pic certainly seems to be the civil type while the second appears to be the military type (EC635?).

Any ideas...

Will the Air Corps roundels be sort of faded to blend in with the green like other Air Forces or will it be the bright green white and orange as it usually is?
Smashing looking piece of kit. The Gazelle would have looked fantastic in that colour.

Maybe this has been asked before but can anyone tell me why the AC buys the civil 135 instead of the military 635 and then paints them to look military?

Is it because of price (probably), JAA/IAA certifications, the fact that the pilots will qualify on the civil machine (marketable in later life - cynical), whatever?

Quote (Flyboy @ 02 Nov. 2005,17:22)

Irish Air Corps Pilots have been training on these aircraft since they were handed over to the Air Corps some time ago.

They will be flown in by irish pilots, as has always been the case in the past, though in some cases the Company's test pilot has accompanied them in an observer capacity.

IMO the roundel should be moved aft behind the door and placed on the main fuselage of the helicopter... having it on the door looks gammy

Well theyre primarily a training helicopter so a bit of high viz will do no harm, plus anything that states "hey i'm an irish helicopter" is good

Now get the Gazelle into the paintshop and give it the same colour scheme and get some military use out of it before it retires.

What can you change the roundel to? You cannot subdue white, or Orange.

I just ran this up on GIMP, basically what I reckon a low viz IAC marking would look like on the ec-135:

I would prefer if they returned to the Old Emergency roundel.

The attempt you just made, while very pretty is not an approved roundel. To wear a subdued roundel you need to have one. Its an emblem no different to a rank marking, cap badge or flag. To alter it, you need approval from on high.

Personally I don't see the point.

Brand new helicopter and we're still complaining !!!
Anyway, is that green even remaining on the heli ,they 'll probably change it to the 'traditional' air corps heli colour...

I think that the roundel is ok but maybe in the wrong place. Maybe it would be better higher up and to the rear. Where it is it has become the centre focus. You will notice that the Irish flag is also High Viz but is not as intrusive to the overall scheme and therefore has not attracted as much critisisim. Even military machinery need Fung Shui!  :p
