Title: RIAT 2007
Post by: Vulcan on March 02, 2007, 03:35:00 pm
Just seen the first listings of RIAT 2007 and they should be on the RIAT site later today.  Cracking first listing with 2 F-117 Nighthawks, B-52's, B-1B's, Canadian CF-188's, Hercs from Brazil and Greece to mention but a few.  Not bad and we have another 4 months of updates yet.  Roll on July!!!

I’m thinking if making the trip for the first time this year
I need some travel advice
If any other member has traveled before could they post a “Beginners Guide to to getting there” assuming they don’t Own a private plane or helicopter to whisk them to Fairfort!

Example: Is there a way from Bristol airport e.g.: trains /busses

Cheers!!!

I went last year for the first time and am going again this year.  Fly to Bristol, there is a regular shuttle bus from there to Bristol via Bristol Temple Meads station, from there you can get a train to Swindon.  We stay in a Swindon B&B and get the shuttle bus to and from the bus station to the air field (£5 return for adults last year).  If you are thinking of going I would hurry and get some accomadation organised as last year you could'nt get a park bench in Swindon at the time of the show!

I and my sons are staying at this B&B this year, looks ok.

Hi all

Just look at the lastest UPDATE for RIAT, a lot of airshows would be happy with half of this lot as their final line up and there is still 3 months of up dates to go!

RIAT updates

That makes it 170 aircraft from 16 countries so far listed all together.  The full list as of the 13th April check the following link.

RIAT Line up

I think they may well steal the show as there are "whispers" on a couple of forums that there will be F-22 Raptors and B2 Spirits also.
There are a few countries that have not yet been added yet that are commonly there, French and Slovakians for two.  Last year there were 195 aircraft present in the final line up and there are 170 already this year.  Its looking to be a good one.

How long would it take  aprox from Swindon to Fairford ?
cos I’m arranging accommodation in Swindon !
I plan to see the show on Sunday so I don’t know whether to book return flight late sun or early Monday  HHmmmm Decisions , Decisions

Joey

The bus takes about 30-40 mins.  It can take a little longer on the way back to Swindon in the evening but the buses have priority routes to avoid the traffic.  You can judge it for yourself, but if there is a flight for you Sun it would want to be pretty late departure.  The train is about 45mins from Bristol Temple Meads to Swindon and the bus from there to the airport is about 25-30 mins and run every 15mins I think.

Hi Vulcan

Was browsing U-Tube and checked out RIAT 2006 came across this footage of the Russian MIG 29 OVT doing it’s thing!!!
He was throwing that jet around like a kite using “Vector Thrust”
I presume you were there to witness the action in the flesh!!

Hope to see it maybe this year
I wonder if most of the pilots display on both days?

Joey

That was one of the highlights of last years show, the way he threw that mig around the sky was amazing.  I doubt if he will be back again this year as last year he was at Farnborough air show and that is a more of a trade show and they are really looking for sales as that aircraft was a protatype and the only one of its type in the world.  Farnborough is only on every 2 years.  Another great display last year was the Swiss F-18 hornet.  It is  basically the same flying program both days.  I went for both days last year and again this year and I'm glad I did as the airfield open to the public is almost a mile and a half from end to end and packed full of static air craft and trade stands.  With 8 hours of flying each day the second day came in handy to look around the static stuff.  The tickets are a bit on the steep side but you certainly get your moneys worth.

Even though the Mig won't be there this year there maybe other Mig 29s, also the word is out that there might well be a couple of Indian SU-30 Flankers there one doing a flying display as the Indian AF are in the UK at around that time doing an exercise with the RAF.  That will be a highlight if they are there and a rarity that you wouldn't see too often.  Also I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they actually get the Avro Vulcan air worthy and flying as my father worked with them when he was in the RAF and I can remeber them when they were in service.

Hi Vulcan

An airworthy Vulcan Wouldn’t that is something Cold war jets that are in flying condition are now as rare a rocking horse droppings.

It would be a wonderful sight to see the likes of Vulcan or even Hanley Page Victor at RIAT

Air show Organizers have to be careful about sophisticated aircraft like the Vulcan,
Id say it would be difficult nowadays since most if not all pilots who flew the Vulcan are either retired, or have passed on and a Vulcan isn’t a jet that you just jump into straight from from, say a Jaguar GR7

Did you ever get up close and personal to a Vulcan cos from looking at footage it look enormous
And do you think Displaying the Vulcan at RIAT 2007 Is a possibility ?!

Post by: Vulcan on April 22, 2007, 02:21:03 pm
I think that there is a better chance of getting a Vulcan this year than there has been in the last few years where they have been hoping for it but due to funding and mechanical set backs it hasn't materialised.  The Vulcan in question is XH558 and there web site is Vulcan to the sky ,They have two airshows provisionally marked in, Waddington and RIAT.  The first offical appearance is planned for the Falklands 25th annaversary flypast in London in June.  The first test flight was due for april but now seems to have been put back to late May.  I was up close to a few Vulcans when I was young and they looked huge but I was at the RAF Museum in Hendon North london a few years ago and they have one there and it didn't look quite so big.  It is still a sizable bomber but it has been barrel rolled, so it was very manoverable.  It has a very distinctive throaty roar on take off from its Rolls Royce Olympus engines (same as Concord used).

Hi Vulcan

Awesome!!

“Flat Spinning the SU-30 was amazing

I’m Confident we’ll see a similar display by who ever attends this years display

Isn’t The RIAT known to have some surprises on the day?
Who knows since the US Military/Navy are celebrating their 60th anniversary, other military states attending the show like the Indians with their Indian SU-30 Flanker, may well try to steal the lime lite after all, isn’t the whole point of RIAT is to show off the capabilities of individual military states whether it be ground /air /or sea .
You witnessed last years Show/s (lucky You) I’m sure that this year won’t be any different Hopefully!
 thumbsup

Although not totally certain the likelihood of F-22 raptors attending RIAT this year is getting more promising by the day.  Take a look at this link

And from the mentioned airshow on Saturday take a look at the display.

Well that makes at least 4 of us going, frank.  Would interesting to have an idea of the numbers of Irish based people that are going.  I that from another forum, there are a few from Cork that seem to be regulars.  Anyway, like you I'm really looking forward to it, looks like it could be a cracker this year.

Myself and another photographer are going, there are actually two board members going that I know of, they will have family members in tow, I know two guys from Cork that are regulars and I know a few guys from Dublin that will probably attend RIAT in one form or other (show days or park and view).

Irish guys can turn up anywhere, I met a group at Beauvechain in Belgium last year and met a few others at the back gate of Fairford during an exercise, not RIAT, last year!

Regards,

Frank.

And to top it all off (If possible) a fly past with a 3 ship PC9 Formation
Is asking too much?????

I think you're hoping for bit much Joey! pilot_laugh  If the IAC send anything, which hope they do, I doubt if it will be flying.  The flying display is somewhat over subscribed by all accounts as it is and they are thinking that they may have to shuffle things around and have some of the acts flying on one day only.  The latest up date was yesterday and its looking good with Czech AF Grippen and Mi-24 Hind being added to the flying display amongst others.

Hi Vulcan
I was just thinking that myself
It must be an absolute nightmare logistically to organize one of the world’s largest airshows in the world looking at the current line up  all that squeezed into 8 hours
There over 40 aircraft-displaying, Id say some of the same aircraft type could be split into to 2 days, that way if you only get to visit one one of the days at least you’ll still have a chance to watch your favorite aircraft flying
Their also are the Formation Teams too :
FrecceTricolori / Patrulla Aguila?  /  Royal Jordanian Falcons  / Team Guinot  & The Red arrows

I wouldn’t expect to see all the teams display in one day its still going to be a cracker of a show regardless what day anyone happens to go
 I  can’t wait!!!!!!

It seems anyone  visiting sunday's Display at RIAT 2007 Fairford are in for  a treat!

Just swiped this News story taken from the RIAT 2007 Home page

"OASIS JUMBO TO MAKE BIG IMPRESSION

Travelling on a jumbo jet will never be the same again for thousands of spectators at this summer’s Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire after they witness exactly what the aircraft is really capable of.

The Oasis Hong Kong Airlines 747 jumbo jet will be put through its paces on the final day of the airshow to illustrate that even large aircraft can possess remarkable agility. In a series of dramatic flypasts, pilots Douglas Millerin and Trevor Cox will demonstrate the maneuverability and climbing ability of the largest passenger aircraft currently in commercial service.

The Hong Kong based airliner, which weighs 400 tons and has a cruising speed of 565mph, is set to be the largest aircraft to take part in the Air Tattoo’s mammoth eight-hour flying display on Sunday, July 15.

Air Tattoo Director Tim Prince said the Oasis 747-400 would add a new – and welcome - dimension to this summer’s flying display."

Lets hope they remember to emty the food storage and passangeres first!!!!

Even the Vulcan as a static would have been impressive

But it's not all bad news though!
They have extended the show an extra " 45 MINUTES” to Accommodate all the aircraft ( i thought for rain stoppage would have been the reason )
I think A packed lunch + Flask o tea and a Deck chair will be a must have on the day

Yep, the weather does'nt look that great but the forecast for Salthill this far ahead said that it would be only cloudy with prolonged sunny spells!! Just shows you, fingers crossed.  It'll be good anyway, I feel sure.  I think the the 45 mins added is more likely to be to accomadate the Thunderbirds pre-show prancing about.  Must make sure we get up and extra 30 mins early to be sure and see the Finnish F-18, that I'm looking forward to seeing.

Where are they going to Squeeze all these static Aircraft

I was on the Riat2007  Blog and there is a lot of concern about security & weather  I was assuming that security would be tight  and  expecting a long Que , Some of the regular visitors where saying 2 hour Qs  were to be expected

Wondering how far is it from entrance to display area cos  I don’t wanna miss anything !!!!
Title: RIAT 2007
Post by: Vulcan on July 07, 2007, 09:04:50 am
I was expecting it to take ages last year to get in.  The security even then was high, with hand held airport style metal detectors and all bags searched so I couldn't see what else they could do.  Lats year we were in in about 15-20 min.  If you ignore all the distractions, like static F-117's you can make it to the dispaly line in about 10 mins depending on where on the line you want to be.  I am just going to get up and grab the earliest breakfast the B&b can provide and get down to the bus station for the shuttle.  The static park is about 1 1/2 miles in length so there is plenty of room for all the static stuff.  I believe you are going on the Saturday only, you are lucky as the Flanker(s) are only flying on Sat.  Lets hope the weather is at least average.
