Title: Chipmunk restoration
Post by: Tony Kearns on March 25, 2011, 08:30:51 pm
Declan Curtiss at present based in Scotland is restoring an ex RAF Chipmunk in Irish Air Corps markings.
The colour scheme as shown is at the time of delivery to Baldonnel and number 169 has been chosen. Declan has taken great care to have the exact scheme for that time and the pictures attached show just what a fantastic job has been completed.
He intends to take it to Ireland and no doubt will attract a great deal of attention, looking forward to seeing it. :applause:

Hi Joe, It could be G-ARGG c/n c1/0247 ex WD305 I think!  Have this photo of it back in 1963, just after it left the RAF/U.A.S. sold to Air Navigation and Trading C0.Ltd at Blackpool. Some one may have more info. Operator is 'Caledonian Chipmunks'  if it is G-ARGG ?

Just got some more pictures from Declan tonight. The Chipmunk is at Audley End and has just had engine runs.
Should be in the air shortly, it is looking really nice. Thanks to Declan for the pics.  :applause:

Yep Joe it looks great, the DH badge  seems to have disappeared early on its career. I have never seen the Air Corps Chipmunks with that badge.

The Chipmunk is not based at Duxford, as far as I know.  The Dragon did make it to Duxford all right and flew with Dragon G-ECAN and Rapide G-AGJG.  Photos will follow...

With all this talk of Chipmunks, had a look in the old archive and found this photo of ‘173’ taken in March 1963.

Thanks for posting.Taken at Gormansburgh I would say.

No I think the bod climbing into the rear position is a bit lower down the food chain, Marks out of ten the photo was taken in the people’s republic of Gormansburgh!
