Title: New Chipmunk169
Post by: Tony Kearns on January 15, 2012, 11:13:13 pm
Went to Ballyboy Airfield today to see Declan Curtis and his Chipmunk restored and painted in Irish Air Corps colours. It looks fantastic, great job.Even met our great Leader (Frank) but he seemed to disappear when I was leaving, too cold, I must be getting soft!

No Tony your not soft, sensible more like. I'm still cold and my car got stuck in the field on the way out .
Luckily some farmer types helped me out.
I've a nice brown car now with brown alloys!!

Tony, no air to air this time, Pat is the man of the moment!

As for hiding on you... I was the only guy across the runway with the hi-viz vest on, pretty hard to miss a target my size!

Was nice to meet up with you again by the way, will see you again in Baldonnel no doubt.

Regards,

Frank.

Great pics Pat as always, sorry Frank I thought that the high Viz jacket that I could see across the field was to keep the sheep off the runway...oops :rotfl:
Only joking Frank always good to see you.

Can someone please clarify for me:

Last week the Air Corps were Facebooking about a restored Chippie, assumed it was one of theirs.  Is this one pictured Air Corps/Ex-AC/Never AC???? :airforce_undecided:

This Chipmunk is ex-RAF, and is registered G-ARGG, it never served with the Air Corps.

The events of last weekend were held to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the introduction of the Chipmunk into Irish Air Corps service.

I've heard a lot of people in the last few days complain how its not the real 169, but we should embrace the fact that the owners proudly had it painted in Air Corps colours. It has already brought back many memories to ex-techies and pilots alike who can only see un-airworthy examples in Air Corps colours .
Would these people be annoyed if they knew that most Warbirds on the airshow circuit ain't originals either??
Doubt it.
