Hi Guys,

It's nearly that time of year again, the Cadetships advertisements should be hitting the Sunday papers soon, the Sunday Independent is one paper I know of that runs the adverts.

The 2004 competition closed on 12th February so use that as a guide as to time.

Below are some links to information that is useful, all are on or through Military.ie but there's no harm having them here as well.

Defence Force Cadetships: http://www.military.ie/careers/cadetships.htm

Good luck to all of you who apply.  If any one has any questions or information to offer please post them here.

Hey does anyone know if the selection process will begin with the physical fitness test this year as it did last year??

I always thought that it was an interview that started the selection but having looked at the 'cadetships 2004' thread, one guy mentions that the fitness test is first..
Title: Cadetships 2005
Post by: Joey d on January 17, 2005, 05:56:27 pm
Looks as if its first.

SELECTION PROCEDURE
Preliminary screening will commence in April 2005. The subsequent stages of the selection
procedure will commence in June 2005 (for Leaving Certificate candidates after completion of
the Leaving Certificate). Candidates, if selected, will be required to attend for the various
stages of the selection procedure on the dates and times notified. Candidates who fail to
attend for any stage of the selection procedure will be disqualified from participation in any
further stages of that competition.

a. Preliminary Screening Interviews

(1) Physical Fitness Test. In order to qualify for a Cadetship candidates will be
required to undergo a physical fitness test which is designed to assess their potential
to undergo the rigours of military training. Candidates must attain the minimum
standard laid down in order to proceed in the competition.
(see Annex ‘A’ for details of the test).

(2) Preliminary Interview. Preliminary Interviews will be held at each of the centres
indicated on the application form, provided that there are a sufficient number of
candidates for each centre.

(3) Consent Form Authorisation. Candidates who are invited to attend before an
Interview Board will be required to complete and sign a Consent Form that, pursuant
to Section 8 of the Data Protection Act, 1988, will authorise the Garda
Síochána to furnish to the Defence Forces either, a statement that there are no
convictions recorded against a candidate, or a statement of convictions, as the case
may be. In the case of candidates under 18 years of age, his/her parent or guardian
shall be required to complete the Consent Form.
Note: Success at the preliminary screening entitles a candidate to proceed to the
next stage of the selection process.

b. Psychometric Tests / Group Assessment / Realistic Job Review

Candidates who are successful at the preliminary interview stage will be required to
attend at the Curragh, Co. Kildare for aptitude testing and to complete a personality
questionnaire. They will also be required to participate in a group assessment. The
Realistic Job Preview involves a familiarisation visit to the Cadet School at the Military
College, Curragh, Co. Kildare and informal interaction with instructional staff and Cadets.
All three components will be conducted on the one occasion.

c. Medical and Physical Examinations.
Candidates selected for final interview will be required to undergo and pass a detailed
medical examination which includes an audiometric test, x-rays, urine and blood tests.

d. Candidates who do not pass the medical examination owing to a medical condition that,
in the opinion of the Examining Medical Officer, is capable of being remedied by treatment,
may be afforded the opportunity of having the condition rectified within a specified
time. Such candidates will be required to submit medical evidence indicating that the condition
has been remedied. He/she may also be required to undergo a further medical
examination as determined by the Medical Officer. Medical fitness will not be confirmed
until the results of all tests are available to the Medical Officer.

e. The Final Interview.

Is is true that the faster you run the 1 1/2 miles the more marks you get or is it just 'pass and get a certain predetermined percentage'. Does the same apply for the the whole fitness test??

Also can anyone point me in the direction of good practice aptitude test websites?

Thanks guys...

Its pass or fail.

PHYSICAL FITNESS TEST
The physical fitness assessment is designed to test the candidate’s current level of physical fitness and
his/her capacity to undergo the rigours of military training.

It is composed of two aspects;
a. Aerobic endurance
Local muscular endurance
b. Components of physical fitness, consisting of body fat assessment, hand grip strength and
flexibility.

FORMAT OF TEST
Aerobic endurance
This is a pass or fail test. Candidates will be required to run one and a half miles within the time limit
below:

Males                            Females
11 mins 30 secs.           13 mins.

Local Muscular Endurance
This will be assessed using push-ups and sit-ups.

                                                Males   Females
Push-ups: (Minimum requirement) 20   20 (modified)
Sit-ups: (Minimum requirement)    20   20

If a candidate fails to meet any of the above minimum requirements, he/she will not be permitted to
proceed to the next stage of the competition.

Candidates will also undergo an assessment which includes three components of physical fitness as
follows:
Body Composition Assessment
This assesses the candidate’s percentage of body fat.The candidate will be subjected to a body/mass
index test.

Strength
Assessed using hard grip strength dynamometer which gives an indication of overall muscular
strength.

Flexibility
Assessed using various flexibility aids (hamstring and lower back flexibility).

All tests are conducted in sports gear. Candidates are advised to bring the following should they be
requested to attend: tracksuit, shorts, singlet/t-shirt, training shoes, towel, and wash gear etc.

In the fitness test they stop you when you get to 20 sit ups and 20 press ups. They mark your time for the run though.

Post by: matt_k on January 31, 2005, 04:51:14 pm
A current cadet told me that they were told to do as many as they could in a minute when he went through selection last year. Has this now changed to doing just twenty?
Title: Cadetships 2005
Post by: dangermouse on April 05, 2005, 11:41:01 am
Does anybody know just how strict they are on the fitness assessment ? i understand the run is a pass or fail test, and you need to do 20 sit-ups and press-ups but after that is everything just an assessment? like the BMI test etc. are they failable or just noted ??
Title: Cadetships 2005
Post by: dangermouse on April 05, 2005, 11:43:53 am
Also one other question, no doubt the press-ups and sit-ups will be in the gym, but where do they do the run - is it on a treadmill in the gym or is there a course set out somewhere ?
Title: Cadetships 2005
Post by: FMolloy on April 05, 2005, 02:55:40 pm
A PDF officer involved in the process has told me all parts of the fitness test are pass or fail, if you don't meet the targets you're cut. He also said that there is no advantage in exceeding the targets set out in the fitness test, the guy in charge simply puts 'pass' or 'fail' on his sheet.

My last fitness test (a couple of years ago) was done out at the polo grounds in the Phoenix Park, you ran outside on the pitch.

I had my interview, went ok I think.

I was asked how I displayed leadership/responsibility/worked in a team etc, basically what I wrote on the application.

Technical questions were about the plane that Ive hours in -how the engine works, the wing, and how the altimeter works.

Another question was to name four aircraft the Air Corps uses.

Hi guys, a newbie here. Got my interview on Friday. Wonder how many out of the 3-400 applications will make it past this stage? It's meant to be fairly similar for everyone, competencies - leadership, discipline/motivation, planning/organising, problem solving/decision making. Would that be right Joey?

Its broken into four: leadership/responsibility; technical apptitude; motivation; leadership. You'll get marked out of those four, for this years IAC cadet competition.

As for the failure rate, it depends on the board, they could decide 50% pass rate or 75%, or some other figure.

well at the end of the day everybody has different strengths.

a sixth year (im just after doing it) could possibly have:
1. a good work ethic, a good focus on studies.
2. an ability to take, obey and follow orders.
3. be an effective organiser ( planning your study in a clear and concise manner, setting yourself attainable goals and striving to achieve them)
4. anything! everyone`s different!

from my experience in the competition so far, being yourself is the best way possible to do yourself justice. that way you`ll have no regrets about how you performed because all you can be is who you are.

all the best with the leaving this year (work from day one and it seriously takes the pressure off in may)
by the way if you are doing construction studies ; electricity, foundations, concrete, and the fireplace drawing are dead certs this year!!!! they didn`t come up for us at all  :D

i'm planning on applying for the cadetships next year, but i have a question.i recently got an eye test done and, alas, didn't meet the 6/9 standard(i'm 6/12 in one eye and 6/18 in the other).
i'm really disappointed by this and i'm wondering is there any "flexibility" in this requirement?
don't want to sound cocky but i think i meet every other requirement pretty well,i've been working on building up my fitness, relevant experience etc.
anybody know if i'm stil in with a chance?
cheers.
p.s great site frank,i've been a long time lurker!

The only ones to go through the medical (as its so expensive) are the 6 or so potential cadets and a few reserves (in case the others fail). So its hard to know. Your best bet would be to ring the competitions section and ask if there's any flexibility.

no i didn`t thankfully. i found the best way is to start your study from day one. and then factor in the necessary time needed for full preperation in advance. that way your clear in the time you are going to devote to the air corps and to the leaving cert.

hey guys, anyone applying this year get through?!
as i said in a previous post i'm applyin next year for the 1st time, but worried about failing the eye test, anyone have any trouble there?
also,i've been wondering about laser surgery,it says in the conditions that applicants who have had previous incisional or laser eye surgery are excluded from eligibility, wonder why that is? i mean if its good enough for US special forces why not my beloved corps?!
best of luck to all you applicants!and keep up the good work frank! :D

hey marketty,
no word yet!!!!!
awaiting the results of the leaving cert at the mo  :p
as for your query on laser surgery, etc. i just wouldn`t know the answer. however a quick ring to the cadetship competitions section next year would put you at ease.
slán.

Im a sub, I have a medical next week, so here's hoping that some guys/gals ahead of me will fail or opt out! Did you hear back from the army?

Fair play! You never know, if they're sending you for a medical you must have some chance. No news yet, I'd say I'll be back next year. Best of luck in the medical though. It's meant to be roughly the same as the army which was ok. Hearing and vision would be common failures so any one of the people chosen could fail them.

Anyway, best of luck again!

joe,
well done on getting the subs. fingers cross you`ll be sprung from the bench in extra time!
as for me, i`ve received no word and therefore must presume the worst.

I wasn't sprung from the bench but for those who may be interested in what is checked in the AC medical:

Height/weight
Different measurements for reach etc as in the brochure
Urine test
Blood tests
Blood pressure
X-ray of lungs
ECG (Records electrical activity of the heart, checking for heart problems. Half a dozen electrodes are placed on your chest)
Audio test
Dental exam by dentist
EEG (records brain wave activity checking for neurologial problems such as epilepsy, 24 electrodes are hooked up to your head!)
Eye exam by an ophthalmologist
Finally a check by the chief air doctor.

Hard luck Joey, try it again next year, you'll be luckier I'm sure! The army medical is fairly similar with the exception of the ECG EEG and lung x-ray.
