Irish Air Corps / Qualifications for aircorps-NEED ADVICE!
« on: September 05, 2005, 06:58:42 pm »
As canner said, there's no harm in applying this year, the interview experience will be invaluable come next year or whenever, if nothing else. Also what'll you say when they ask you why haven't you applied until you're 23 if you're so interested?

You will really need to get across that you really want this job and you're prepared to be a military pilot rather than just a civil one because there is a big difference. Once again bear in mind the 7 months in the Curragh - a tough slog.

As canner said again, the attitude and appearance is everything. 6 places (or 10 this year) is very very little and you'll really need to stand out if you're going to entertain notions of becoming an AC pilot. Don't waste the next few months, start working on it now and the best of luck!

Hard luck Joey, try it again next year, you'll be luckier I'm sure! The army medical is fairly similar with the exception of the ECG EEG and lung x-ray.

Fair play! You never know, if they're sending you for a medical you must have some chance. No news yet, I'd say I'll be back next year. Best of luck in the medical though. It's meant to be roughly the same as the army which was ok. Hearing and vision would be common failures so any one of the people chosen could fail them.

Anyway, best of luck again!

I wouldn't think so, unless the aircraft showed hostile intent. Better to be prepared though

The IL-2 Sturmovik line would be an excellent purchase. It involves the original IL-2 and the Forgotten Battles, Ace Expansion Pack and Pacific Fighters add-ons which are also seperate games.

The runway in Gormo can be just about seen if you look hard enough!

There's also a large online forum where users contribute locations of anything interesting they have located around the world. Some absolutely brilliant viewings. The military section is particularly interesting, especially with regard to the US.

When on the thread, click the 'open this placement' link and you will be brought directly to the spot on Google Earth programme.

Yeah, you're probably right about Donegal. I honestly don't know what will happen when it's sold.

With regard to the railway, although the army have a liason officer who liases (if that's a word) with everything and everyone (Dublin and Baldonnel airports, Drogheda port, Navy and anyone else) I've often seen firing take place as trains go past. In fact the drivers often slow down to get a good look. There is no real problem as the line is situated directly to the rear of the firing point and well outside of the arc of fire. These are the arcs in which the guns can only fire, roughly 30 degrees each side of the barrell. If they go outside the arcs (which are well marked), the Flycatcher radar will not fire the guns.

Obviously if any person or vehicle goes into the red flag area (the beach and general area marked by the flags) then firing must cease but as the railway is directly to the rear, the danger to it is probably nil, or close enough to it that the trains are allowed through at all times.

I'm not him John K unfortunately! Eddie's not even my name! The ad in the papers made it seem as if the Air Corps would be firing also which wasn't the case.

With regard to where the ADR and the Air Corps would conduct future shoots, I don't honestly know. From what I've gathered we'll just find somewhere else. I've heard Donegal mentioned a few times as a possible location but that's just idle speculation. Any ideas from anyone here?

Bear in mind though the talk of selling Gormanston has been going on for years so even though it seems certain it will come to pass, it might be another while yet before it happens and we have to worry about moving on.

Hi 202,
It was an RDF and PDF shoot. The 1 (PDF), 2, 3 and 4 (all RDF) AD Batteries. The drogues were towed by a Cessna. The PC-9s didn't make any appearance at all.
