Irish Air Corps / AB139 Pics
« on: April 05, 2006, 11:57:39 am »
It is possible I am mad, but I remember when the tender proposal came out. The Aircraft had to be proven Military Aircraft and built to Military spec the winning bidder also had to provide interim aircraft until the order was completed.

Was this the case?

Fise, Crow, sand piper, Curlew, Avocet, goldcrest, goldfinch, greenfinch, blue tit s far as I know have not been used and off the top of my head I could easily come up with another 50 or so. And I think you mean Dipper not Dagger.
Banshee is a good one as Guninness suggested.

I can hear it now, "hey dad I just saw a wolfhound flying over the house", ehhh

Well there are pigs flying around Baldonnell daily. I saw them flying over limerick the other day too...

True sealion, but it does sound a bit odd, flying Wolfhound. Robin, albatross, gannet something that maybe associated with flight might be better then a breed of a dog that is known to be big and lazy and not very fiercesome despite its name.

Well if Kestrel hasn't been used for 30 plus years, it could be a goer.

"Osprey" or Peregrine. or even Kestrel. I know they are all birds of Prey, but isn't that what the AB139 is supposed to be.

Its not an edited picture, the aircraft has been decommissioned and therefore logos have been removed or painted over.

Irish Air Corps / selling dauphin's a mistake?
« on: February 03, 2006, 09:15:43 am »
Warthog, welcome, Your ideas are spot on, but many people do not want to see the Dauphins around anymore. I think the Air Corp, always try the poor mouth approach to getting new equipment. By this I mean decommisioning aircraft in the hope the MOD will feel sorry for them and order some new stuff. It has not really worked well in the past and why they contiue with this policy I don't know. I guess they are holding back the Dauphins, until the option on the two AB139's is taken up.
Then maybe they will be brought back in some capacity after a downgrade. certainly they are not past there sell by date, a nice green colour scheme would look the business, even an air Ambulance role would not go amiss.

Irish Air Corps / Airlifter?

Part of the conditions of being in an EU battlegroup is you have to be self deployable, therefore you cannot call on EAG in the first instances, if the EAG is even set up to respond to emergency movements in the first place. The 8 C130;s currently for sale, are old but certainly not past there sell by date if the info on the sales pitch is correct. Maybe Marshalls are looking in the wrong place or looking for real dirt cheap C130's. As these C130's look the business and two have had complete overhauls.

One simple check and I found 8 C130'S for sale, from the A version, B,E and H. And not wild money either. And most of these were upgraded and have the type 3 wing, not new but certainly capable of a good few years work yet if looked after.

If we do join Sweden, Norway and Finland in this EU battlegroup would it not be wise and better if we get the C130, at least then we would be a common aircraft as two of our partners which would help inter force operations and movements.

Irish Air Corps / Dauphin upgrade?
« on: January 11, 2006, 02:11:32 pm »
I am bloody handy at making cars lightweight, I am sure I could do a job on a Dauphin. I know of a chap in Mayo going to build a helicopter sim, using an ex British Army Gazelle airframe. All the drawings done, prices got for parts etc etc. Hopefully he goes through with it.
