Irish Air Corps / EC135 Have they arrived
« on: April 17, 2005, 10:13:32 pm »
Surely one of the Don bods would have mentioned something if they'd been delivered?

Irish Air Corps / Marchetti's - what now ?

Keep the one that needs the most work for the museum & sell the rest now while they're still worth something, then put the proceeds of the sale back into the AC budget.

A PDF officer involved in the process has told me all parts of the fitness test are pass or fail, if you don't meet the targets you're cut. He also said that there is no advantage in exceeding the targets set out in the fitness test, the guy in charge simply puts 'pass' or 'fail' on his sheet.

My last fitness test (a couple of years ago) was done out at the polo grounds in the Phoenix Park, you ran outside on the pitch.

Irish Air Corps / Life after the PC-9M's

I'd say the next aircraft purchase will be a cessna replacement, hopefully by a bigger & more capable type (defender or caravan?). After that, some sort of tactical transport (C-295 or C-27 most likely) but I'd say there'd be a big gap between the two.

Irish Air Corps / UAV's for the Air Corps

The rest of the money will probably go on ground control stations, spares & maybe a launch platform. It may even include vehicles to carry the stuff.

Irish Air Corps / UAV's for the Air Corps

If we follow the path laid out by other armed forces, the UAV will be used for observation & recconaisance, battles damage assessment & possibly an artillery observation role.

UAV's are a long overdue addition to the AC's orbat & leave the door open for a uniquely aerial role for AC personnel overseas.

Unfortunately, a large portion of RTE is only interested in pointing out the faults & failings of the country's security forces  '<img'>

Irish Air Corps / Bring Avro Cadet 'C7' back to Baldonnel campaign!

The fact of the matter is that C7 is the oldest Air Corps plane - end of story. There can never be an 'older' AC plane...

If/when the C7 ceases to exist, it would no longer be the oldest aircraft & the next oldest one assumes the mantle.

Which brings be to my second point. Assuming they buy the C7, would keeping it flying be worth the risk? As I see it, there's a financial risk & a human risk. The human risk would be that to the plane's pilot, historical flights have lost aircraft before & the C7 does not have anywhere near the survivability of a modern aircraft. Would flying the C7 be worth the potential cost of a pilot's life? The financial risk is putting all that money into an aircraft that could crash & reduce the investment to matchwood.

I would support the purchase of the C7, provided additonal funds were made available for the purchase & it was permanently grounded in a museum. I think Sealion makes a very valid point about the AC concentrating it's limited resources on it's future.

Are these jets the same ones you've been promising us for the last couple of years?  '[<img'>

And it's yet to be proven that emailing Willie has made a difference.

Irish Air Corps / Possibility of transports?
« on: March 02, 2005, 01:47:30 am »
I don't see the EU giving us any money for new CASA's, they've got all the new member states looking for the same benefits we got in the past.

I think it's hope on the part of the manufacturer, they can see the AC's need for such a transport & are trying to keep AC brass interested in the Spartan (landing one in the Don last year being an example of this).

It's like Aero & the L-139 - there's been no formal expression of interest from the AC but the manufacturer percieves a sales opportunity & acts of his own bat.

Irish Air Corps / 'The Canberra Incident'?

No McGuinness was 2nd in Command in DERRY at the time.  He was always Derry based, not Belfast.  When he wasn't fighting the war he would be found flyfishing in Co Donegal!!

By 'fighting the war' I assume you mean killing innocent civillians & racketeering.

Or are you a bar-stooler as well as a Walter Mitty?

My own view of this is that we should keep some of the Marchettis for Basic Flight Training and light strike training.

What's the benefit in a small air wing like the AC operating two entirely different aircraft in the same role? Especially when it's training needs aren't massive?

Whatever the money is spent on, the Marchetti's should be sold while the AC can get something for them.
