Site Information / Upcoming Website Changes
« on: March 02, 2015, 09:09:32 pm »
Evening all,

Just letting you know that over the coming weeks I'm going to make some changes to the website, specifically the IrishAirPics.com part of it.

WorldAirPics.com as a picture database, has all the functionality of IrishAirPics.com, plus a bit more besides. A small portion of IrishAirPics.com has also been my "professional" home for years now, but it's kind of hard to reach, so......

With that in mind, I'm going to dedicate IrishAirPics.com to my "professional" endeavours, while WorldAirPics.com will serve as the picture database.

And before anyone panics, ALL the pages of IrishAirPics.com will stay exactly as they are, nothing will change, except for the homepage, although the search page will be re-directed to WorldAirPics.com.

This means that any page that is indexed by Google (or any other search engine) will stay as it is, so if anyone searches for your picture and Google throws up an IrishAirPics.com link, it'll still work.

It's about time I tidied things up, finally make the website one thing or another. If anyone has any questions or concerns just ask, but rest assured that neither website is going anywhere for now, and neither are your pictures.

Regards,

Frank.

Site Information / IrishAirPics.com on Facebook
« on: January 03, 2013, 09:01:38 pm »
Evening all,

I've set up an IrishAirPics.com / WorldAirPics.com presence on Facebook, you can visit the pages here:

http://www.facebook.com/irishairpics/
http://www.facebook.com/worldairpics/

While the Facebook page for IrishAirPics.com is based on the Photo Reports section of the website, the WorldAirPics.com Facebook page also allows me to connect WorldAirPics.com with a wider audience, people clicking on "Like" can help spread links to a particular picture much faster than sending links via email.

And over the Christmas, in line with setting up the Facebook page, I've added 3 prominent links below each picture that allow you to:

  • Like the picture on Facebook
  • Tweet the picture
  • Email the picture to a friend

Those links have always been there but now they are much prominent now, please feel free to promote your own pictures, there is no restriction on you clicking "Like" for your own pictures, more Likes = more hits for your picture.

Click here for an example: http://www.worldairpics.com/photo/1045946/

I'll be promoting pictures also, we'll drag IrishAirPics.com / WorldAirPics.com kicking and screaming into the social media age yet!

Happy New Year to all!

Frank.

Aviation Waffle / Movements lists
« on: March 08, 2012, 10:15:47 pm »
Hi Guys,

I see movements lists appear to be getting a bit more popular here so I've made a new addition to the forum, namely a Movements page that is for members only.

Why the members only restriction?

Because it appears that most of the movements being posted are related to Baldonnel movements and the Air Corps and some of their visitors are a bit sensitive to having details of their visit being published in public especially when the visitors are still on the ground.

As we all know both Shannon and Baldonnel have experienced trouble with protesters in the past and I don't want anyone on this board to be responsible for giving any information away.

Personally I would prefer that you didn't post the movements but if you have to post them please post them in the movements section. There are other forums out there where you can post the movements but I have a good relationship with the Air Corps and I don't want to mess that up or have anyone getting into trouble.

And if you do post movements that you found elsewhere on the web please provide proper credits and links with your post.

Regards,

Frank.

Site Information / Forum Etiquette
« on: December 28, 2011, 10:57:09 pm »
A few issues have come up in another post on this forum and I would just like to post these guidelines here to ensure that we are all singing from the same hymn sheet...

Please:
  • Use punctuation, capital letters where appropriate, and refrain from using "txt speak" in the forum
  • If you have an issue with any post please contact me or use the report post button before sending abusive private messages or reposting said messages on the forum
  • Be courteous, a little manners go a long way, we are a very small community and the less people you alienate the more information you may be able to A) find out, and B) share
  • If you repost information from a press release, website or newspaper article please include a credit to the source of the news along with a return link if one exists.

Like I said, we are all a very small community, we should all try to get along as much as possible.

Regards,

Frank.

Aviation Waffle / Censorship Thread
« on: December 20, 2011, 07:32:50 am »
Hi Guys,

Just so you know, this time I removed a thread, the Censorship thread.

Why?

Basically because I don't want any of you, or me for that matter, to get in trouble. Serving members of the Defence Forces can get in trouble for posting information or pictures without permission.

Just because it appears on another forum doesn't mean it is ok to post this one, you can still get in trouble.

I hope you understand, I personally have a good relationship with the Air Corps which I don't want to mess up, I also don't want to see any of you getting into trouble.

Unfortunately there are people out there who collect this information for the wrong purposes, and I don't mean terrorists, I'm referring to those people who tried to break into Baldonnel a few years back, the last thing I want to be accused of is helping them out.

There are other forums and mailing lists where you can post or find information regarding movements and visitors, post at your own risk though!

Kind regards,

Frank.

Aviation Waffle / Capt. Jim Creamer - Ferry Flight
« on: December 15, 2011, 01:14:10 pm »
Capt Jim Creamer is an American Ferry pilot. The link below shows his track from his commencement in Florida to his current location in Newfoundland. He intends to cross the Atlantic tomorrow. His final destination in his Piper Seminole is China.

He undertakes several of these marathon ferry flights of new aircraft each year. Recently he has used Sligo as a stopover. Not sure on this occasion - depends on weather, he may use the Azores route.

Site Information / Website downtime - October 2011
« on: October 08, 2011, 05:33:02 pm »
I would just like to apologise for the website downtime that was experienced between the 5th and 7th of October, my hosting company decided that they didn't like a script that I was running on the website and they turned the website off with no warning.

I removed the offending piece of script but had to wait for the hosting company to review the changes before turning the website back on.

Anyway, IrishAirPics.com & WorldAirPics.com are now back online, sorry for any inconvenience caused, no pictures have been lost, normal service has resumed.

Regards,

Frank.

Irish Air Corps / Air Corps to resume SAR operations?

Minister to study case for Air Corps's return to search-and-rescue activity

http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ireland/2011/0412/1224294482289.html

------------------------------------------------------------

LORNA SIGGINS, Marine Correspondent

MINISTER FOR the Marine Simon Coveney said there may be a case for the Air Corps to resume its search-and-rescue role on a long-term basis.

However, Mr Coveney said he did not think it would be possible on legal grounds to revisit the controversial €500 million contract signed with CHC Helicopters for new search-and-rescue aircraft.

Mr Coveney told The Irish Times that CHC Helicopters had been doing a “really good job” for the Irish Coast Guard, and he praised the work of rescue crews in last week’s search for the two Skerries fishermen who lost their lives.

However, he said he had raised concerns when in opposition over the decision to exclude the Air Corps from bidding when the new helicopter contract came up.

He believed there was a case for the Air Corps to resume this role, possibly on a shared basis, in the long term, subject to the agreement of Minister for Justice and Defence Alan Shatter. “The first consideration is quality of service, which we have been getting, and secondly value for money,” Mr Coveney emphasised.

He assumed responsibility for search and rescue late last month as part of his attempt to rebuild a new department responsible for marine policy, as well as food and agriculture.

In 2004, the Air Corps was pulled out of search and rescue by the then defence minister Michael Smith, after 40 years.

In a related development, the RNLI says its latest all-weather class of lifeboat will be called the Shannon . It is the first time the name of an Irish river has been used to classify its lifeboats. Previous lifeboat classes have been named after rivers in England, Scotland and Wales. The Shannon class will have a top speed of 25 knots. Arklow lifeboat operations manager and RNLI honorary life governor Jimmy Tyrell said he was “thrilled with the news” as he has campaigned for many years for an RNLI lifeboat class to be named after an Irish river.
