Aviation News / former IAC Spit 159 down

The former Irish Air Coprs Supermarine Spitfire T9 Tail #159 was involved in a wheels up landing in Kent today (7th Sept).

It's not the first time she's landed on her belly. Luckily there were no reports of injuries. Hopefully pilot and machine will be back flying again soon.

Ireland is "Europe’s weakest link" in air defence cover because our Air Corps is so poorly equipped it cannot defend our airspace against hijackers taking over commercial aircraft or intrusions by foreign military aircraft.

Aviation News / Angolan Alouette III crash

During a flying display on January 21 2015, a Sud Aviation/Aérospatiale SA-316B Alouette IIIA helicopter rotor severs its tail during a maneuver. The helicopter belonged to the National Angolan Air Force (FAN) at Saurimo (Lunda Sul). The display was a part of the celebrations of the 39th anniversary of the Angolan Air Force. The pilot and co-pilot of the helicopter survived.

January 19th 2015 is Dublin Airport's 75 Birthday.

Dublin Airport officially opened at 9:00am on January 19, 1940. It was a cold Friday morning when the inaugural flight - an Aer Lingus Lockheed 14 bound for Liverpool - departed from Collinstown Airport, as it was then known.

According to The Irish Times 12th Jan 2015, a new agreement is to be signed between the Irish and UK governments that

... will involve the Irish Army training British soldiers in peacekeeping operations as part of a wide-ranging deal involving closer co-operation between the two defence forces. Another aspect of the agreement provides that the Irish Army will be provided, free of charge, with equipment that is surplus to the requirements of the British army.

Another S-92 query.

Having observed the Dublin machine operating over the city and off the coast, it appears to fly with the landing gear constantly down. Is this SOP or a feature of the individual aircraft? Is there a performance penalty for this and what's the reason for it?
