Ex Air Corps Spitfire at Oshkosh - pictures

(1/2) > >>

Frank:
Hi Guys,

Col. Paul Fry has sent me a few pictures taken during the summer at Oshkosh / EAA AirVenture 2009.

Of main interest to most people on this forum are the pictures of a former Air Corps Spitfire although I don't know what it's serial number was when it flew with the Air Corps (Tony???)

Anyway, the pictures...

Paul also sent me a few other pictures from his trip to the USA, not really Air Corps related (unless you count the fact that a member of the Air Corps took them) but here they are anyway...

Irish251:
It wore serial 159 in Irish service.  There's a detailed history of it here but I can't vouch for its accuracy -again, Tony will be able to advise on that!

Tony Kearns:
Oh Frank, you are in BIG trouble Paul Fry is a Colonel, that will be after hours detention for you. :fryingpan:
SF is correct the Spitfire was 159 in Air Corps service.
It had no RAf Squadron service, but served with two Free French units, 341 sqn. from January 1944 to late June and did carry out a sortie early on D Day providing low beach cover. Late June it went to 340 sqn.until the end of July. It was kept in storage until purchased by Vickers Armstrong in July 1950 and converted to two seater Tr9.
The attached show 159 in Air Corps service and Perter Arnold's pic as G-AVAV taking part in the Battle of Britain film. It looks positivly ugly since the rear cockpit was covered over. 159 actually has the wings of 158.

Tony Kearns:
oops sorry about that 2 pic

Frank:
Thanks for the info and pictures Tony & SF.

(Thanks Tony, error corrected, I'm now standing in the dunces corner!  )

Regards,

Frank.
