Firstly there's no guarantee the AB-139's will be armed, the tender merely stated they had to be capable of mounting weapons.

Secondly, how much money would the AC have saved if they had ordered the PC-9's unarmed? I doubt it would be a huge amount, certainly not enough to buy an extra AB-139.

Turkey your comment earlier that the pc-9s cannot be armed with aim9s or aim120s in saying that you are both right and wrong!they cannot be armed with the aim120 but they can be armed with the aim9 if fitted with a infrared guidance pod such as the brazilians and their tucanos and piranha missles.

I will have to take your word on that , my understanding was that the length of the AIM-9 and the fact that it launches off the rail[and therefore must be outboard of the propeller arc] made it incompatable with the relatively narrow wing width of the PC-9.
Whats this infra-red guidence pod,the AIM-9 has it's own seperate sensors? I have to admit to being a bit lost here.
Ireland, no jets, no future!

im not fully up2date with the infra red /sidewinder combo but the pod detects heat produced by an aircraft engine and guides the infra red guided sidewinder or what ever missle you want to marry to it excluding bvr missles.heres a pic of a simulation pod to simulate a sidewinder in mock dog fights and training.this pod is actually fitted to a pc-9!
