Irish Air Corps / Gazelle 241
« on: December 14, 2003, 05:28:11 pm »
If they do not want it, they can drop it down to my house. Give me a year or two and we will have it back in ship shape and looking the part they can then have it back and use it as a gate Guardian.

Irish Air Corps / CASA's defensive capabilities ?
« on: November 27, 2003, 10:47:39 pm »
What defensive capabilities do the CASA's posses that could be used in a wartime situation to defend/protect Ireland ?

For example,
Could their radar be used as an 'early warning system' to detect hostile aircraft ?

Hi Guinness,

I'll try my best to get some pictures but I won't make any promises.  Hopefully some of the regular contributors to the site will help me out with some pictures.

Regards,

Frank.

Irish Air Corps / Air Corps Roles -
« on: December 20, 2003, 11:26:48 am »
Thanks Guiness,

I do hope we can keep some form of SAR support to the army. The equipment is there in the short term and with a little more personnel training we could still maintain a low level of service to our own training troops in Ireland. It will have to be considered as a role for the new utility helicopters for C-SAR and casevac, especially in the light of Sgt Mooney's (RIP) accident in Liberia. Potentially, any suitable utility replacement has the ability to carry out C-SAR as long as they drop the word 'light' from the competition.

Irish Air Corps / Light Strike Squadron
« on: December 10, 2003, 08:12:18 pm »
Will the Light Strike Squadron (LSS) be reactivated with the arrival of the PC-9M ?

I recall reading (somewhere?) that there were plans to allocated 4 x PC-9's to the Flying Training School and 4 x PC-9's to LSS.

Is this the case ?

Irish Air Corps / Dauphins

Scorpy, is correct the cost of upgrading the Dauphin is not a lot of money. Not sure about the 1.5m though the size  of electronic components has never been smaller, and the cost is the lowest they will ever be, So if you cannot upgrade, because of cost you can enhance what you have for very little. Eurocopter have cheaper alternatives on everything they offer the customer, as a supplier to them I know they beat the price down to the last 0.0001 of a cent. And the customer should do the same to them believe me they have room to move.

Irish Air Corps / Alouette commemorative patch
« on: October 07, 2003, 07:16:08 pm »
Not a bad idea John K.

However, personally I would still like just the badge alone (if a large quantity were ordered I suspect the cost would be low - c.€5).

Frank,
I forgot about the Bremen badge.
However, an Alouette patch would be the first to commemorate an Air Corps aircraft !

Irish Air Corps / 'Landfall Ireland'
« on: September 11, 2003, 07:39:53 pm »
A new book about aviation in Ireland is now available -

'LANDFALL IRELAND - The Story of Allied and German aircraft which came down in Eire in World War Two' - by Donal MacCarron.

(Mr. MacCarron is a well-know author to anybody with an interest in the Air Corps, having written the excellent book 'Wings over Ireland - The Story of the Irish Air Corps' some years ago.)

I've just bought my copy of Landfall Ireland today and will be reading it at leisure over the coming weeks.

Anybody else read it ?

Irish Air Corps / King Air
« on: October 23, 2003, 09:05:46 pm »
I agree Imshi.
But I suppose those aircraft wouldn't be as 'comfy' for Bertie and Co. !

With the withdrawl of the King Air, the Corps will be left without a twin-engined trainer - the CASA's will be left to 'pick up the slack'   '<img'>

Irish Air Corps / MATS Learjet
« on: October 17, 2003, 11:31:12 pm »
I believe that the contract has been formally signed for the new MATS Learjet, and it is due to be delivered in December.

Any more info re livery, etc ?

Even though this new jet will be of little benefit to Air Corps operations perhaps, at the very least, it could bear the lettering "IRISH AIR CORPS - AER CHOR na h-EIREANN" as part of it's livery (like the old MATS HS 125-700 jet).

It would be good PR for the Corps, seeing as this jet will be spending most of it's time abroad (in 2004 especially!).
