Irish Air Corps / PC-9's on grass airstrips ?
« on: July 01, 2005, 08:05:20 pm »
Can anybody confirm if the PC-9's are capable of grass airstrip ops ?

I thought they were listed as being so capable during the tendering process, or perhaps I'm thinking of the Super Tucano ?

If so, have they yet operated from a grass runway ......or any plans to do so in the future ?

Irish Air Corps / AC 'fleet' poster ?
« on: May 20, 2005, 09:09:12 pm »
I recall seeing an aircraft fleet poster for Malta's Armed Forces a few months ago and it got me thinking how a similar poster would be a great PR tool for the AC.

They could show a photo (or colour print) of each aircraft type in service along with ........

- number of each type in use
- what each type are used for
- date entered service
etc etc etc

I'm sure such a poster would be easy to produce, and perhaps could even be produced 'in house' by the AC photographic section ??

Irish Air Corps / Military.ie ?
« on: May 06, 2005, 08:10:58 pm »
Who maintains the Defence Forces official website - military.ie ?

To be more specific, does somebody from the Army maintain the Army section, likewise for the Air Corps and NS sections ?

I believe it would be much better if each arm of the DF's maintained their own section.

The site is a bit staid at present.

Irish Air Corps / Impromptu PC-9 display !
« on: April 27, 2005, 08:34:43 pm »
Just a note of thanks to the AC 'jocks' who put on an impromptu display over Newbridge today -

Two PC-9's flying in formation, when one broke away and did quite a few fast circle circuits over the town, then proceeded to rejoin the other aircraft and head north.

The aircraft sounded great and really caught peoples attention - many stopped and stared for quite a while!

Well done guys!!

I'm (now even more!) looking forward to the Bray and/or Salthill shows !

There is a photo of an IAC CASA 235MPA on patrol in the current edition of Air International. It is part of an article about surveillance from the air.

Irish Air Corps / New Air Corps aircraft prints ?
« on: April 17, 2005, 05:18:59 pm »
Has anybody seen/bought from the new company advertising in Flying In Ireland magazine ?

They call themselves 'Greypencils' (www.greypencils.com) and have many black and white prints of AC aircraft for sale (@ €32 each).

Anybody bought one of these prints ? Quality ? Satisfied ?

(N.B. - I have no connection with this company)

Irish Air Corps / Marchetti's - what now ?
« on: April 09, 2005, 08:35:44 pm »
What will (or should !) happen with the Marchetti's now ?

- One retained for museum and the rest sold ?
- Be Scrapped ?
- Be donated to another (poor) country ?
(Switzerland donated helis a few years ago).
- Other suggestion ?

BTW, how many of them are fully airworthy at present ? ...5/6 ?

Irish Air Corps / Register of former IAC aircraft?
« on: March 19, 2005, 12:20:52 am »
Have any of you guys considered putting together a 'register' (i.e. a list!) of former IAC aircraft ?

(i.e. history since the left the IAC,
- where they are now,
- new operators,
- new reg number, etc. etc.)

It would make a nice addition to this site !

To start, I believe Provost 178 is now on the UK civil register.

Irish Air Corps / Wales Air Support Unit
« on: March 18, 2005, 12:21:45 am »
I've just watched a documentary about the South & East Wales Police (Heddlu) Air Support Unit who operate a Twin Squirrel heli (as do the GASU).

It highlighted the obvious advantages of an air support unit - especially when it comes to searches for missing people or catching fleeing criminals.
One case shown involved catching 3-4 guys hiding among ferns on a hillside - the termal imaging camera soon spotted them ! '<img'>

It left me wondering when we will see a similar programme about the work of the GASU ?

Irish Air Corps / Bring Avro Cadet 'C7' back to Baldonnel campaign!
« on: February 27, 2005, 02:32:39 pm »
It was mentioned in another thread that the Air Corps was trying (within the last year or so) to purchase the oldest AC aircraft in existence, Avro Cadet C7, from it's New Zealander owner James Schmidt.

See http://www.avrocadet.com/ for aircraft details.

Apparently, the Dept of Finance stepped in and put an end to the deal.

Well, why not sell a couple of Marchetti's to fund the aquisition of the Cadet ?

I recall reading a few years ago the s/h Marchetti's can fetch in the region of $100,000 - and are much in demand.
(There is no reason why the Marchetti's can't be 'demilitarised' and sold on the open market.)

That way the DoF don't have to hand out any money and the AC would have their most historic aircraft returned to Ireland.

It really would be a disgrace if this piece of Irish aviation history was lost to the State !!!

Irish Air Corps / 'The Canberra Incident'?
« on: February 21, 2005, 10:09:47 pm »
In another thread, pym mentioned 'The Canberra Incident' and how the AC would have needed "24hrs notice" to get a Vampire in the air, in response to the incident.

What did 'The Canberra Incident' involve ?
When did it happen ?
What was the Irish govts (and the publics) response ?
And how could the AC respond if this happened nowadays ?
