i doubt that we'd let someone else base aircraft here,or that we'd lease anything from england...buy it maybe but not lease it .

the government would rather risk an attack than lose face by appearing subservient to another power

Irish Air Corps / Air Corps receive first AW139

illustrations i've seen have shown the ab149 (or is it ah149?)
military version fitted with gun pods and rockets but i'm not aware that we've bought these,i guess they're an option down the road if we wish but for now it's two GPMG's i'd say

hate to gripe but the orange around the emergency windows looks a bit crap,it's too wide a stripe and kind of defeats the camo scheme! plus why didn't they come up with a low-vis roundel? i'd rather see the roundels done in three shades of grey or at least muted/pale green, white and orange on a camo machine!

otherwise it's a beaut, reminds of the old pics of the puma!

oh and i have it on pretty good authority that we certainly are getting the optional order of two more machines  'thumbsup'

add a pair of sidewinders to two of the pc-9's
we could do this very quickly with minimum cost,it's certainly be an improvement over what we have now

Irish Air Corps / dauphin update?

that would be great, once we find a customer for them but i'd say it's more like sell four dauphins + gazelle to use the option we have on the other two 139's, so a fleet of 6 augusta's looks likely,to get more we'll have to wait for the government to cough up more money!

Irish Air Corps / dauphin update?

yup they plan to keep them in service for about another ten years or so at least so i've heard, we could have four upgraded choppers in a very short space of time when compared to the waiting lists for new types, for roughly the cost of one new machine i'd guess

the '98 cost was 1.5 million each for an avionics upgrade per dauphin, even if thats doubled in price since thats still four choppers at 3million each,twelve-fifteen million maybe for the lot at a guess, how much will one ab-139 cost us?

we could probably do it even cheaper if we when for a "grunt bus" approach and keep the avionics suite basic, use it as a pilot/troop carring training step before graduating to the 139

well folks it would seem like the dauphins didn't sell,so what now? will they be put out to tender again?
realistically who's going to buy four ex military aircraft that'll be very hard to get civi rated?

time to look at that avionics update with a fresh pair of eyes!
throw a few panther engines into the equation and we've a great workhorse LUH on our hands!

Irish Air Corps / Salthill Air Show 2006
« on: June 26, 2006, 01:23:57 pm »
i enjoyed every minute! special mention should go to the two A III's which stole the show for me,hadn't seen one up close since i was a kid playing in the don, they really are in great nick,we should do everything possible to keep one air worthy as a historic flight once more 135's come on stream

f-15's were loud!! but the flying display was nothing special, very sedate flypasts bar one near verticle climb that sent nearly every child present into tears!
surprised that these were armed too (four sidewinders apiece)

red arrows were simply stunning,no other team comes close

merlin display was great, wish we had two of these  and the seaking finished things off nicely with a wee jaunt down the flightline 'pilot_cheesy'

well worth the round trip drive from dublin

why not, sure we can even get this stuff in a nice shade of green down in woodie's  'pilot_grin'

a few tins of this stuff...lovely hurlin!

only joking...the old bird is the best thing we ever got

oh and shamrock i'd say most of those losses were back in the day when it was more like an aerial version of duffy's circus, much less of that carry on these days

Aviation Photography / Buying a new camera
« on: June 06, 2006, 09:37:32 pm »
eh you won't get into the dslr game for that money, you'll get a nikon d-50 new for about 650/700 but thats with a very short range, rather flimsy lens

i'd look at the canon powershot s3 for that money,6mp 12x zoom,it's got an ultrasonic, image stabilised lens

the thing to watch with aerial shots is that unless you tell the camera otherwise it will meter the light levels off the sky in the background, making the aircraft look very dark so set the camera to spot meter in the very centre of the shot and be acurate with getting the aircraft dead centre frame, this is tricky with a moving plane and the lag on a digital,so look for something with a good burst frame rate and a fast focusing lens

ignore the megapixel race it's silly! 5mp is ample once the camera has a good lens in front in the firstplace
