The PC-9's go active
« on: November 28, 2004, 10:54:52 pm »
A PC-9 was seen on thursday in Bal' with gun and rocket pods fitted.
They are to do air-to-ground shooting in the next few weeks, at a floating target at sea, location presently unknown, [to me anyway].
Zulu, of Robot Wars, fame built the target,[Ch***t, it will probally fire back!! ]

We'll Ive seen at least 4 of them with the pods on, i.e two FN .5 machine guns(one on each wing) and one rocket pod (2.75inch FFAR's) outboard of each gun.

Some pics of them firing - or even better, some video footage - would be great to see !

Incidentially, was there ever any video footage of the Marchetti's firing, or the Fouga's for that matter ?

Is it Air to Ground , Air to Air or both.

Will they be Jaffa's i.e. firing blanks ?

I got to see the guns in the armoury when I paid a visit recently, are you sure they're .5s P.Doff? they looked more like 20mm to me!
I couldn't believe that the PC9 can pull 9g! Jeez, I remember blacking out at 6g in a Fouga, but 9g with a prop on the front!

Firing in Gormo, watched yesterday, live firing too, very impressive, I could see 4 hardpoints (2 each wing) not sure if there were rocket pods and guns, it seemed to have pods on the inner hardpoints on each wing. Only firing guns while i was there, they were very accurate too, so impressive to watch, gave me a lump in my throat! stacks of locals have been heading down to watch. sorry, no decent camera, tried to get one or two on a dodgy kodak, bring binocs too, oh yeah, and have fun! they are VERY loud, VERY nippy, and VERY cool. I envy the pilots. '<img'>

Do you know if they will be in action on Monday or Tuesday ?

Best viewing spots (outside 'restricted' zones of course) ?

yes,

best viewing point is to head down the balbriggan to gormanston road, take the Gormanston Train station turnoff, go up over the tracks on the humpback bridge, keep going about 50 yards until you reach the last bend and can look down onto the beach from above. Theres a red flag right there, you can observe perfectly from there and with a decent zoom on a good camera you should get excellent pics.

you will see off to your left the floating orange target, facing it, the PC9s fly from your left to right, opening fire over the fields before beginning to climb just as they are out over the beach and you can watch the strafing runs for hours  '<img'>

Hope to get up again myself maybe for the rockets if they are firing them from there.

BTW deffo looked to make quite big splashes, i doubt the guns are .5 i would reckon they are larger than that.
